Remote Starter Transponder question
Remote Starter Transponder question
I have a quick question about remote starters. I have installed a Bulldog Security RS1200 in my '01 I30.
I have 2 keys, only one of which has a registered transponder chip. That key is going in the Bulldog 791 transponder bypass module.
When I push remote start button on the Bulldog security remote, the car will start and idle. When I enter the vehicle, will I be able to use my non-transponder key to drive it off?
Stated another way, is the transponder chip just a one-shot enable for the starter and then the car can run until you shut it off? I don't know whether the ignition on (ground signal) from the RS1200 control module to the 791 bypass unit is always on or just a one-shot then off deal for the starter.
I understand what you'd suggest, I can just permantenly ground the enable pin for the 791 bypass module....but wouldn't that increase the risk of using up the battery?

I think once you hit the brake the remote start module ceases its operation (and so would tell the bypass to stop also)... which means you'd need a transponder key in the ignition by that stage.
Two options.... get a better bypass module.... or get a 2nd transponder key. Can get blanks on ebay pretty easily

I had bought my 99 i30 which had an aftermarket alarm installed. The remote for it was old and beat up so I went to a local shop and ordered 2 new ones. When they came in the shop programmed them and told me it had a remote start feature. They said the key in the transponder box wasnt any good but if I had a spare key they could put my key in the box. The spare key was left at home so they told me they could still do it and I could just remote start the car, use the key with the bad chip just to turn the ignition and I'd be fine.
Long story short, YES, you can remote start your car and use your key with the bad chip to drive your car. But that'll be the only way to start your car until you get another key programmed.
