how often to change gear oil

Guys - New (95)Maxima owner, and my first 5 speed.
How often do I need to change my gear oil? Ballpark, what should this cost?
The last time I had it changed they replaced something called the neutral switch... uh what's that?

If this makes any difference, I'm pretty easy on the clutch.... I miss a gear and grind it a bit once a week. Thanks for your help, great site.

Not to break *****, but if you are grinding your gears once a week you are not easy on it. When I miss a shift(rarely) especially during a hard shift it makes me want to cry.

Neutral switch is that black round unit at the bottom of the tranny. These are notorious for springing leaks in them. When you do change the tranny fluid, carefully examine the condition of the fluid especially looking for silvery shavings and check the seales around the CV axles for leaks. Be very careful of worn bearings.

just make sure you don't use the wrong type of gear oil.. API GL-4 I think is what you need.. And don't get the multigrade stuff either... 75w-90 is what you would need ie... Redline MT-90 expensive but good synthetic. Other grades will destroy your synchros over time..ie GL-5
