To JAIME-
dude, calm down. its threads like this that help us. we get everyone's opinion. it lets us make an edcuated decision when/if we decide to buy a radar detector or anything else. in this case, it may not be as much of an opinion as you think. its not an opinion when it comes to WHICH ONE CAN DETECT FROM FURTHER AWAY. according to shumax (who has owned and used all 3, v1.7, 8500, and v.18) his real-life test showed that in a real-life situation the V1.8 out performed the 8500. i personally own an 8500 so i am not arguing against you. but there is no need to flip out on anyone. people get into debates here all the time. 'altezzas' is our subject of choice. just state your opinion and read others' but dont attack anyone. i apologize for the people who may have attacked you. basically, just chill and have fun here.
Also, I didn't know there was a V1 1.8. Didn't know there was a 1.7. All the literature that I had read before always refered to the detector as a V1. I learned something new here sure enough. I'm not a die hard fan of anything electronic. Everything changes so often that just when you think it's the best, something else comes out to change that. Just don't appreciate people not having any courtesy for a difference of opinion or even ignorance.

You know what? You morons must not know how to read, but you claim to "experts" on the subject, huh? If you would only read the thread and not be so ready to put out propaganda, I gave your holy V1 it's cudos. You have your opinion, and I have mine. It's that simple. It's not rocket science or medicine, it's only an opinion. You people act as if I had cursed out your mother or something. My entire point since the beginning when people got the feathers ruffled was very simple and direct- Do the research and make your own mind up. Not go out and buy something your buddies "think" is the next best thing to sliced bread. Bottom line once again for those who are a bit challenged is: I'm happy with mine, you should be happy with yours. Nothing you say, especially trying to insult me, is going to change my mind. If you would go back to the very beginning thread, what does it say? Does it ask anywhere about the V1? Does it ask the merits of this ****ing contest? It asked a simple question regarding where to get an 8500, I was just trying to help the person out. Everyone else chiming in beating on their chests about their opinion of me is all useless and non productive to the initial subject.
P.S. If you're ever in Atlanta, let me know and we can discuss our opinions face to face. I bet you wouldn't be as eager to get smart then. Let me know

Another one of your types? You can't out do me with facts and knowledge so you flex your muscles? Wow---am I impressed now!

Point is, you don't have facts to back your statements. Therefore, don't try to out do people who do have the facts.

Actually Mr. I have all the facts, the real point is all you V1 worshipers chimmed in on a thread that has nothing to do with the V1. Why don't you start a thread about all these "facts" you know and let's see. All of you who have come in and tried to spout out "facts" are repeating what other "experts" in here have said, and since only one person who has commented has any real research to back up his opinion, what does that make the rest of ya?

after 1 person recommended the V1. Maybe this guy read one of those BS articles and thought that Passport was better? Spreading the truth is a good thing...accepting it is even better You should try that...

I might buy a V1 for my wife just so I can do some realworld testing myself...until then, I know the V1 is better...there's nothing to prove...

Actually genius, those are your words not mine, but you're right the passport did beat the V1 before. And if you would take the time to read instead of coming into a gun fight with a knife, you would notice that even the one guy who probably has the most credibility out of all of you acknowledged that. He also stated that the V1 that everyone here is so bent out of shape about has not been tested, except by him. So therefore, I have not said a single word regarding the venerable 1.8 because I don't know anything about that particular unit. It seems that you just wanna be another follower. And as I have stated before, you don't know me, but if ever in Atlanta I can introduce myself and see if you're as bold as you try to be.

I stand corrected. I just finished reading the article in the latest car and driver mag. The V1 did pretty much trounce the competition, including the 8500. The 8500 is the closest thing to a V1, but still got pretty much smoked. I guess I just have to eat crow on this one. My appologies to those who were better informed than me. You learn something new everyday.

Does anyone wanna buy a used 8500?

X Band pretty much means nothing, just FYI. hardly any policemen actually use it anymore.

That link was to x-band data...it's useless. Most people program X band out because it's NEVER a cop (maybe in a po-dunk town they have a 30 yr old radar gun )

Regardless, try the V1 for 30 days...return it at no cost if you like your Passport better. Run them side by side if you like. If you like the V1 better, then sell the Passport. Once you have the directional arrows, all other detectors will annoy you...trust me on that one...

My bad. Wrong link. Here's the full story;

http://www.caranddriver.com/xp/Caran..._detectors.xml

About all this X-band stuff, you'll be surprised. I was also, I took a road trip last year. NJ state troopers still use it, and in Ohio, driving along thinking that all my X alarms were false, I almost get nabbed by Ohio state Police!! All the while my V1 was warning me, for a looooong time. It was interesting how the very east side of the Ohio turnpike, the troopers were using X band, but the west side was full of K band and a sprinkling a laser equipped trooper vehicles.

Now--when you want to battle use those sites as proof. Or take the writeup poeple have done on here. I am biased because I have spent about $800 in two radar detectors--8500 and V1 Version 1.8. However, if you read my writeup, I have owned other crap from Cincinnati Microwave, Whistler, Uniden....all of them including Beltronics. I shouldn't be so harsh on Cincy Micro---they do make a good product, just not as good as the V1.

I PERSONALLY don't enjoy beeeeeep, braaaaaaap,brap-brap.....I enjoy this---beep--arrow ahead. Double beep, 2 signals, one arrow ahead and one to the side. I ignore the side shot and move on paying attention to bogey 1 ahead. Better yet, which ever "direction" is flashing is stronger so I pay more attention to it.

Good luck----
V1 baby!

If you converted Russ it must be a new wonder of the world Those articles do speak well for V1s, but due to the expense of the unit and the greater theft for a V1 I opted for the Passport. I try to avoid debates over which is better, but for my wallet the Passport definitely worked better. When my Passport becomes older I'll probably go V1, but until then Passport provides a much cheaper alternative as a solid performer.
