I just got a new 2K2. Should I wait the first 500 or 1000 miles before I open it up and start modding it. Or is this just some B.S. from the dealers.

Take a road trip or two and the break-in period will be over before you know it. When my friend got his brand new 330i a while ago we went to atlantic city and what not the first night he got it, I bought my car used or I would've done the same. ofcourse you can't speed so that's another b*t*h, but a couple of hours driving pays off and then it's all fun from there.

it's also "recommended" to vary your RPMs... so constant highway speeds aren't the best for break-in.

For the first 2000 miles...vary RPMs, keeping them below 3000 and try not to shut down and restart too much.

Also, change the oil after the first 1000 miles. The oil is at this time full of microscopic metal due to the break-in, so it's good to get rid of this oil.
