This morning I went back down to Mr. Muffler to get a pipe replaced in my dual setup, and we got to talkin about how my setup sounds. Nice and deep at idle, but a little weird at high revvs and stuff.
He told me becuase V6 engines usually use smaller pistons, and mainly becuase we have 2 cylinders on the end that arent paired, thus giving off kinda an akward sound. (4 middle cylinders are paired, outer 2 are single)
He said that's why alot of 4cyl. engines can sound better than most v6's becuase they have the two cylinders paired and bigger pistons = better sound.
He also said whenever a V10 truck will come in he doesn't even bother messin' with their exhaust becuase the sound is just too weird.
Hmm, this is interesting. What do you guys think...

But I am just curious if someone knows slightly what he's talking about and explain it technically. Pretty weird he'd say somethin like that outta the blue.

Exhaust theory as it pertains to your original question is probably beyond the scope of your questions and is certainly out of the scope of this thread.
It has to do w/ displacement, # of cylinders and firing order. ie.. 12 cylinder Ferraris don't sound like 454 hemis.
If you really are that curious, I suggest a general search on google or something for exhaust systems or exhaust theory or something.

three things go into how the exhuast sounds, first of all the type of system your using, second the displacement of the engine (generally more air flowing the more ***** out the car is going to sound) and finally, type of engine (v-8, i4 i6 v-6 v10 blah blah blah) a car with odd numbers of cylinders in their separate sides such as the v6 (3 cylinders in one bank 3 in the other or a viper with a 5 and 5) will sound unrefined in dual exhuast form, in may 2001 issue of road and track with the 2003 viper feature they address this problem for the viper

BUT, I dont have a true dual setup, just a pipe running around the spare tire. It sounds nice, but sometimes a little weird

Does that mean anything to you? It should. The guy was absolutely correct in his assessment on V6. There is only one reason for the existence of the V6 design.

Note BMW would never ever use a V6, they don't have to since they don't need to turn the motor sideways. But that 6 is still crammed in that engine bay on the 3'ers!
