Hooking up sub Need info on RCA cables

Ive never hooked up a sub before and i just got done doing it. The amp turns on fine but the i didnt hook the sub up correctly. The RCA cable inputs on the sub are this screw type and the cables dont fit direct in they're too small. If you unscrew it enough there are sideways holes in the inputs if you know what im talking about. Can anyone help me hook it up correctly. Also how can you tell what hookup is what on the sub, whether it is + or - ? The box i have is really hard to see the connections. Thanks
Kinda confusing...
First off... is you sub box amplified or not.
Amplified ones take RCA imput(s) (and sometimes also have speaker connectors) and have hookups for 12V and Ground and Remote.
An nonamplified sub box only has speakerwire connectors... then you need an amplifier and connect the two (box and amp) using speaker wire.
I won't get into crossovers/parallel/series etc...
If this didn't help then please post more info on your equipment...

The RCA cables don't go directly to the sub, they goto the amp. To connect the speaker, you run speaker wire from the amp to the sub. There shoud be RCA plugs and a place to hook up speaker wire also on the amp. the speaker wire fits into the screw posts.
