I noticed the Org has been quite busy lately and would like to help ease the traffic on the server.

If i'm not mistaken a lot of this traffic is caused by large sigs and image hosting from within the Org's server itself.

I'd like to do a test-run on this solo project by asking you guys if you'd like me to host your stuff and see if it will help ease traffic here.

Here's what i'm willing to offer:
- A meg or two each/user to host the sig and some photo's (yes, you can host a lot of photo's - just post-process your images to be saved at a smaller res and/or optimize it, don't use it directly from your digital camera's)

- Your own domain (e.g. http://www.domain.ext/username), i already have the domain ready - you guys may be happy with it actually.

- It's free.

The conditions are:
- You use it for the above purposes alone. Yes i do have monitoring in place throughout the server in case someone thinks about abusing the service.

- Since this is a test-run and i'm not asking for anything in return, be adviced that i can revoke the service anytime i need to and downtime may be experienced. (To make you feel good, the server has been pumping out data non-stop since December of 1999 with a 99.98% uptime).

- Given this is a test-run and Jamie might not approve of this condition 2 above can come anytime.

I'm thinking of setting up a 2-3 week test run to see if it will help improve the Org. After that we'll see.

I think you are mistaken. Currently our pictures are not hosted by the .org, nor are our movies. They do no use any BW from the .org. All the slowness of the .org is from an underpowered server/too many users.

Some sigs are still being hosted by the Org servers. I'm well aware that most movies and photo's are hosted elsewhere.

Some image attachments are also hosted by the Org servers.

 

Jamie has already made us aware that sigs do slow down the org. When we didn't have sigs, especially those with pics, the org was muc faster and you rarely saw the imfamous "currently busy" crap. I say get of pics in sigs and reduce the characters in the sig.

I think that you're making a good suggestion towards attempting to help the speed problems that this board has been having over the past couple of months. However, I don't think that the hosting of signatures on an independent server will help a great deal towards relieving the stress on Maxima.org's servers.

At some point every member of this board has received the "server is down" message and has probably been ver yannoyed with it. I think that the only way to allievate the problems with the speed of this board would be to get a newer/faster server. That costs money though, and that's why the owners of the site made a donation section. That's just what I think. But it was definately a very good jesture on your behalf my friend.

I have in fact contacted Jamie about the donation of a dedicated server - or at least half of the resources of which i'm willing to give. He thought it was a good idea and asked if we could start with image/video hosting.

I responded but have yet to get another response towards another question which i posted.

This is more of an interim solution. The image/sig hosting does help a bit depending on how you look at it.

Say there's roughly 50 people (at minimum) showing a 10kb signature. Consider that each thread that signature is shown is viewed 60 times (on average, as you'll notice it's much higher than that in reality).

Multiply that thread by the number of posts a day (est. 15 new posts). Then multiply by the number of forums on this board (roughly 19). Finally multiply it by the number of days /mo.

So, 50x10x60x15x19x30 = 256,500,000 Or 256 MB/mo of bandwidth.

Of course the numbers may be higher or lower, this is just a rough estimate but you should get an idea of the numbers.

Those people with sig's being hosted by the org should not be then. I can assure you that my sig is hosted by me. It is on my box not the .org server. It has 0 affect on the the server's load.

I'm aware of that as well My own sig is hosted on my own server. But there's a lot of members on the Org that doesn't have that ability and i'm asking to help them.
