Timing Chain Replacement Questions...

Good morning everyone!

Three years ago I built a VQ35DE and installed it in my '04 SE, using a Cloyes timing chain set. The timing chain slack side shoe has broken and allowed the secondary chain tensioner to extend all the way out. The slack side shoe in the Cloyes kit, oddly enough, is the same part number as an OE Nissan part.

My question is, I noticed that the early VQ35's used a different chain system, and that the tensioner shoes, tensioners, etc. were of a different and much beefier design. Has anyone ever used the earlier chainset in a later model engine? Seems to be a lot of failures in the later model design...

It's been revised multiple times. The current part number is 13091-JK20A. I would think buying the updated version would be better.

Interesting... That looks like the early style tensioner shoe...
