Now that its gotten cold out, I've noticed that my maxima boggs down when I first start it up. It kicks over, revs to 1500 RPM, then boggs down to about 500, then goes back up to around 1300 or so. It only does this when the engine is cold, on the first startup. Anybody else have this problem? Whats the cure?

Do you hear weird humming/whistling noises from the engine? Engine not as quiet as it used to be? I had that bogging problem. And it turned out my alternator was fried. One day it didn't bog. It just caught fire. Got the alternator replaced. No more bogging. Get it checked out dude. Seems that the 97s have alternator problems.

yupe..

had that problem since 5k miles.. finally @ 15k miles i took it to the dealer and they did a "TUNED UP" to the car cost me $30. now @ 40k miles, the same problem is slowly coming back~~

my symptom was on 1st crank/start in the morning, the engine rev to 1000 rpm or so.. then it drops to 400~500 rpm.. then the engine dies.. too keep the engine from stalling, i rev the engine once or twice and everything was fine~~

Dude, they did that to me the first time I brought it in.. Charged me 30 dollars for "belt adjustment". Then a few months later my alternator catches fire.. watch out.

yep same problem here, but it only happens when it's really cold. I crank it, it starts revs up to 1500 then dies.
If I hit the accelerator and keep it at 1000 for a sec it's fine after that. Someone mentioned that it could be fuel pressure problem. If u ever find how to fix that let me know. I also noticed that my idle is too low at 500, I'll be bumping it up to 600 this weekend, maybe that will help.

I had the same problem. I called the dealer and they told me to bring the car over. I left it there for one night and got the results the next day. They said it had to do with some kind of valve that's out of adjustment. Had it fixed and now everytime i start the car, it would stay above 1500 rpm and it doesn't drop any more. I'm happy!

I hope it drops down to 600-700 after it worms up.
Listen give me more info on what valve needed to be adjusted
I'm not gonna pay $$$ for a simple adjustment.
thanks

I'm not sure if you can do it yourself. The dealer did it for me under warranty. I don't know what's the name of the valve but the dealer told me it was a valve and said they don't know why it's out of adjustment. After my car is warmed up, it goes to about 600-700 rpm. At night when it's cold, the rpm is exactly at 500. I'm not sure whether the rpm should be like that or is it my K&N drop in filter.

I wonder if it's covered under power train warranty

probably the idle air adjustment unit or the air regulator. these valves tend to get clogged with carbon over time. pull off the hoses leading to / from them and spray in intake throttle body cleaner. this should fix it.

when your car stays at 1500, it would suck some of your money for using gas,i guess so.

yep....

same here on my 93. It seems the colder it gets, the lower the cold idle is in the morning. It always fires up and hits 1500-1600 when warm out. Now...with 30 degree temps its like start....1500....then right down to 1300. On really cold days...like 0...it has done that start and then die. I crank it over the second time and its fine.

Also say on a 15 degree day it may start...then drop to 500 and catch itself. I think its a nissan injector thing. Cuz every once in a while I get a "mis" on cold starts. Plugs, wires, dist cap rotor have always been in good shape.

No biggie tho.

It would be at 1500 rpm (give or take) the first time I start it up in the morning. Then it gradually drops as the engine is getting warmer.
