A few 5th Gens went to the track today

A few of us got together and hit DeSoto in Bradenton for the Saturday AM Test and Tune. Little did ww know there was a huge VW meet going on and the place was packed! So, we didnt get too many runs in, especially as the morning wore on. I also couldnt get ANY VW's (except a friend of mine) to run! Wimps!

My 2000 Max SE 5 speed is back to stock, so I decided to see what it would do. I did end up pulling the air filter to see if it helped. (But, since it was so crowded, I didnt get to do any back to back runs to see the difference.)

Ill say this......Traction was terrible! There was very little VHT down on the track and it made for difficult launches to say the least. Temps were nice though as it was about 70 F.

The best I managed was:

R/T 0.402
60' 2.303
330' 6.276
1/8 9.544
mph 74.98
1000' 12.383
1/4 14.754
mph 94.85

No comments about my red light!!!

Was that run with or without an air filter? Great time BTW!

Awesome stock time! Imagine if there was a bit better traction! What is your launch technique?

What other 5thgens ran (mods/tranny) and what were their times?

What did chipped out 1.8T jettas run? And GTI VR6?

Did you take the whole air box out, or just the air filter? Isn't that bad for your engine, running with no air filter?

I usually hold it at about 4500-5000 rpm and ride out the clutch and feed in gas as fast as traction will allow. Today it was tough.

I raced a buddy's chipped/exhaust 1.8T Beetle and he ran a best ever 14.84@91 mph. Some larger turboed 1.8T's were in the high 12's low 13's.

All the VR6's that I saw were in the 15's except for a few turbo and S/C ones.

Without the airfilter. (I pulled thw airfilter and tray out of the tock box and left the hole open.) I wish I could have done back to back runs today and noticed if there was a difference. About 2 years ago I did make some runs both ways and didnt really see any changes. But, the car does sound a heck of a lot meaner running down the strip with the filter out and the airbox open.

Just the airfilter.

Yes, its not the greatest idea. But, for short periods it wont be a problem. I just wouldnt run around for a long period of time without one.

Im not sure of his exact time, but I believe Jerome ran a 14.8x with his 2000 Cali Spec 5 speed.

That is a terrible trap speed for that turbo beatle, that is slower than stock. Was there something wrong with it?

Actually, he was also wondering why it was so slow as well. His previous best was a 14.98 @94 mph. But, sometimes when you really hook up (he got a 2.15 60 ft. How he got it I have no clue since the track was slick as #$%#), your trap speed comes down some.

I think stock he was running in the 16.0@86 mph range.

Shoot....Im still ticked I cant get close to my previous best when I had the CAI and Y-pipe.

But, that being said, if the track had done any kind of prep today and wasnt so cheap with the VHT, Ill bet 14.5's all stock would have been possible since I was nearly 0.2 second off my previous 60 ft times. The race all depends on those forst few feet.
