Alternator

I went to a nissan dealership for service for a whinning noise today. They want 600 dollars to fix the alternator. Does this sound fair to you guys? Whats the average price for fixing an alternator? If anybody lives in the MD/VA area and knows of a good and fairly cheap auto shop can you give me some info. Thanks.

Go to autozone, I paid 250 or so for an alternator, and i Couldnt imagine labor being 350 for that part though..

That's what my local Nissan dealership quoted me. I just turned around and left.

not everyone is handy enough under the hood (me included) but if you have someone there that knows what they're doing to help you, you can learn a lot, and THAT is priceless

what do i need?

Do any of you guys know if theres a certain type of alternator i need to buy to replace my stock '97 gle maxima one? I dont know much about this topic and did a search and im still pretty clueless. =) But i am thinking about buying an alternator and trying to install it myself. I was thinking maybe i should get a higher amp alternator just in case i would want to install a kick *** system later on. What do you guys think? Is there anything else i need to buy along w/ the alternator when replacing it? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
