sat in 4 6-spds on Sun., price range 19k to 93k
The cars were the following vehicles:
new Hyundai Tiburon
Toyota Matrix 2WD
Maxima with VLSD
Porsche Cabrio Carerra
The Porsche and Nissan held no surprises, they were as is to be expected. But the Carerra's P Zeros had some nice rim protectors, wish my Sumitomos had them. Nissan was ho-hum, sticker was over 30, way too much for those looks. Also, looked like no shortage of 6-spds, about 1/4 SE's were such. Only 1/8 SE's were VSLD though.
The surprises were found on the Hyundai and Toyota. The Hyundai now has struts on the hood at a time when Nissan is eliminating them, ie G35?? Also, the Tiburon has Michelin Pilots standard in a 17" with dual exhausts. WTF I can't even afford Pilots for my 4th gen, that is excellent rubber. The Porsche, Toyota, and Hyundai also have rims which require stick-on weights with none showing on the outside, and also each had 3-spoke leather steering wheels. C'mon Nissan, catch up! For once just toss that old inventory, stop using it next year!
The Toyota's stick is very German-esque, dang, not all long and soft throws like a Max or most Japanese cars--short and tight. Also, R is correctly placed to the left of 1. Boy toyota is coming on strong. The fit/finish of the new Corolla blows the Altima out of the water. What may be difficult though is for people to get used to the idea that a Corolla and Civic are the same price. But Toyo is still arrogant--go to a Nissan dealer and before you can turn around a saleman is on you like white on you know. Want a toyota salesperson take a number.
There's no way Nissan can be asleep while their opponents are putting all these products out that are sure to sell. So c'mon Nissan, let's see what you got 6 mos. from now!

I thought Max's come with HLSD? (2k2).
Anyway, the G35 doesn't have the strut because technically it's not that heavy (Aluminum) so it doesn't really matter much. And the target audience for the G35 are mostly people who, chances are, for the life of their car won't even look under there.
As for fit and finish, i have to agree that Toyota's have a good interior but if you also look at the new Camry and the current Avalon... nuff said.
You also have to take note that the Altima is the first iteration of this design, it's going to be better as the days go by (e.g. 2003 model). The current Corolla is still very similar in design to the 2000's and thus have gone through the entire trial and error process.

also, every car you mentioned is a "new" model (except the porsche which is 3 times the price of the maxima). why would you be surprised if nissan reused the steering wheel they've used in the current generation?? some of your posts don't make sense, imo.
