My uncle tried to teach me a while back but all that happened was me keept letting out the clutch too much in 1st gear so the car started to shake and eventually stall but got the hang of it once I got the car moving. The first time I really learned is in my automotive courses in college when we had to disassemble transmissions for study and later had to test drive the cars to make shure everyting is ok, thats when I started to take the time to learn the gas/clutch relation.

I learned the basics on a john deer tractor. The really kewl thing about tractors is that they have no suspension, so when you dump the clutch the tractor will do a wheel stand. We used to line 2 of them up and see who could do the longest/furthest wheelstand with a tractor. As I recall my friend had the record wich was about 12 carlengths... BTW I was 14 at the time, and still recall that as the best job I have ever had...

[News annonoucer]Here we are where another tractor wheelie has gone horribly wrong... as the teen started the wheelie, the tractor steered into an on coming honda, where it became apperant that the honda would be a hood ornimant.......(inaudiable)[/New annonoucer]

I love reading all of the stories in posts like this! I learned to drive a stick (and a car in general) in a 1982 Toyota Starlet 5-speed. The car was amazing - it averaged 53 MPG on the highway - maybe 45 city. The first time driving it (coming home from a family event with parents and sister in car), I got stopped at a traffic signal on a 17% grade with a jacked up Ford pickup right on my bumper. After stalling the thing 3x and each time drifting slightly backwards (with Dad yelling and younger sister crying ), I had enough! I floored it, popped the clutch and was out of there! Sometimes you learn things quickly under pressure!

I learned stick when I learned to drive when I was 16. My mom took me out in her 91 5spd camry. I didnt grind the gears really...just stalled countless times. I've since taught my girlfriend to drive stick so she could buy a 5spd. learning is well worth it...auto's ar ejust so damn boring to drive

I used to just watch my dad drive his 1966 VW beatel. Mechanically it looked very easy to drive. The first time he handed me the keys and said show me what you can do I wound up taking him for a ride around the block. I was 15 years old at the time. Driving a stick shift was a natural for me. Now after 20 years of driving I own my first automagic.

I think you can get sticks on rentals here in the US, but it's hard to find. you probably need to call around.
why not go to some dealerships and "test drive" cars with a stick. that why you beat up a demo ride. The dealer was going to tech my gf how to drive a stick during a test drive of her car.
