2k2 Depreciation

Being that Nissan has bad resale value,if I were to upgrade to a 2002 SE next month, how much of a depreciation hit will I take in the following year? How much of a difference will it be from buying one in 2003?

It's bad, you know

The residual values on a 2k2 Max SE is for years 2, 3, 4, 5--very very poor.

53 47 41 36

A 2k2 RS-X is

62, 54, 48, 42

It's like an Acura can be 1 year older yet still have a higher than a Max that is 1 year newer.

A BMW 5-series makes the Max look like a joke. At 4 years-old it has the same residual that the Max does at only 2 years.

That's why a buyer needs not be ashamed that when the salesman says you're squeezing blood from stones on a Max deal, take that price and chop another $2500 off. If you don't, that's how much you're just throwing away. Big % diff. year 2 with Max and RS-X.

IMHO Xenons and 255hp are not enough to ignore cold hard poor residual. Keep the car 5+ years and then you can forget about this stuff.

Thanks Frank that was just the kind of help I needed in making a decision.

Yea i was going to say the same thing go for leasing. Leasing is the best with brand new cars. I bought my 92 used and my mom has so far leased 2 altimas and the next will prob be another alt or a max on a lease. As soon as you drive a brand new car off the lot, depreciation takes a whoop right then and in the case of the 2k2 if theres plans for a 6th gen soon the 2k2 resale will take a nose dive.

The Max is just one of those cars that you buy "NEW USED". Either get a Demo or one thats a few years old, never buy a Brand new one, you lose alot of money quick. Or be like me and Yellowbrother drive it until it dies!

The Maxima resale value is what I'd consider average. You'll hear alot of people cry out that it is horrible, but let me list some cars with horrible resale....
Kias....any and all
older Hyundais
most GMs that are not trucks/SUVs...particulary the Cadillacs
any Chrysler product that is not a Jeep Grand Cherokee or minivan...namely Neons and Intrepids
Daewoos....any and all

Now, the Maxima is not like an Accord or Civic that will holds it value forever, but its not horrible.

I can personally vouch for my Accord's excellent resale value. Honda's are great cars to buy NEW.

The only good time to buy a Nissan NEW, IMHO, is at a model year end clearance with mad incentives, or at generational end clearances with insanely mad incentives. Otherwise you just get taken, especially if you plan to switch cars soon. Like others have said though, depreciation doesn't really matter if you're keeping a car long-term.

My 99 Maxima with every option would have sold for close to $30k just like the 2k2's are now. I got it just off lease in mint condition for $17k. Depreciation sucks, but not when you either lease or buy used

Nissan's are great cars to buy used. Speaking of which, these 2k2 Max's are going to be a great car to pickup at killer prices in another few years when they start coming off of leases
