Whining sound

Whining sound when the car is driving slow from stop. Coming from driver side front wheel in drive or neutral, changing pitch when driving faster. Starts after a 10-15 min of driving, sooner if hot weather. Checked brakes, not it. Looks like a cv joint or wheel bearing .I have 1999 se auto, 48000 mi, no mods.Any suggestions. Thanks.Andrei.

Open your hood and have someone rev the engine. It could be an electrical whining/buzzing noise. Take a piece of PVC pipe and hold it to your alternator, see if the noise is coming from there. If so, it could be your alternator's voltage regulator. You'll want to do a load test on the alternator. Perform a search here on the .ORG and key in "alternator load test" or something.

I think I know what it is, but I don't know what it's called. Take off your wheel, then take off the big bolt on the middle of the whole brake assembly. take a mallet and hit the protruding screw thing in towards the car. Now look behind the brakes, and you'll see where the assembly seperated, and there will be bare metal. Take some high speed grease, and apply generosly. Put back together. If you have any questions let me know.

I really need to work on my terminology.

Andruxa. Most likely it's a wheel bearing. I had the same problem last summer.
A good way to check if that whining sound is engine related: go straight on an empty parking lot or road, roll down the window, shift into neutral, turn off the engine and keep rolling for 10-15 seconds. If the sound disappears then it might be your alternator. If the sound is still there then it's possibly your bearing or cv joint.

I would say both. My max was an auto and this method helped me to recognize the problem.

Uh oh! Sounds like the same problem I have. Humming sound, leaking gear oil...You my friend may have a problem with the differential carrier bearings in your tranny. I had about 90k miles on mine before it started.
