The shop said that the differential on the old tranny was nearly destroyed...it fell apart so badly that it scored/gouged the driver's side inner CV joint so badly that it was not salvageable. They had to get a new joint. Of course, also something inside the tranny failed catastrophically (making the tranny lock up internally even when in neutral), so that's two major problems. Good thing I got a new tranny...almost surely a lower-cose proposition, plus of course I'm getting to upgrade.

They said the flywheel and everything looked fine.

Bad thing: Turns out the used Mueller aluminum flywheel I got had a steel insert too badly warped (from heat spots) to be ground out. I would have needed to send the flywheel back to Mueller to have a new insert put in. That's $100 to put in the new insert, plus overnight shipping charges ($90 total), plus additional labor for the shop to put the car back together enough to roll it back out of the bay. Overall, that's probably another $300 or more. I said forget it - turn the stock flywheel and use that one (the stock flywheel is fine, just needs resurfacing). I'm looking at things this way: I got 2 out of the 3 things I wanted (1-VLSD tranny Yep, 2-upgraded clutch Yep, 3-Al flywheel Nope).

The car should be ready for me this afternoon.

Anybody want to buy a Mueller Al Flywheel? Will sell for $250. You get the new insert put in for ~$150 (regular shipping). Not a bad deal considering a new Mueller FW costs $514. The flywheel is in good condition aside from the steel insert. Anybody?

Get the stock flywheel lightened. Should be about $160 and they should be able to take out about 3-4 lbs safely. Read my FAQ for details.

Too late (car is already being put back together). I actually thought about it, but frankly I just don't want to bother with it. I don't think the shop does that sorta work anyway.

..."Cause 2 outta 3 ain't bad," or however that country song goes...

Better traction. It's has a viscous limited slip differential rather than the normal open differential. Traction off the line should be better, especially in wet or icy conditions. Handling might improve also in that I can get better traction when powering out of a corner. Should should should

This transmission is I believe standard on canadian SEs, and is pretty much the same thing that is offered in the new 2001 Anniv Edition SEs, the only difference being that the 5th gen trannies have strengthened 1+3 gears. Besides that, should be the same.

Not even that complicated. The old driveshafts work fine. Nothing needs to be replaced except for the tranny itself. No complications at all. Sweet, eh?

Now on the auto tranny, I do believe you do have to replace the driver's side driveshaft. Don Cooper has more info on that.

You'll like the VLSD, its hard to imagine driving without it. In my se-r I can go WOT around sharp turns and the car just pulls through it. Where as if I was in my maxima or mom's civic it would torque steer into the next lane or smoke the inside tire. It does help acceleration off the line too, I have gotten the jump on quite a few cars.
