I just turned 100K on my 96 maxima gxe, part of the maintenance service I was wondering if my car has a timing belt that need to be replaced or it uses a chain and no need to change it.

If it's noisy, you might want to take a looksie at the chain tensioners.

All 4th Gens are chains

ALL 4th gens have timing chains--GXE, GLE, SE (all had VQ series engines). And they are supposed to be maintenance free as well. Definitely have them looked at if they're noisy. FYI, with the 3rd gens, the 92-94 SE's had timing chains (VE engines), whereas all of of ther others, 89-94 GXE (VG engines) and the 89-91 SE (VG engines as well), had the timing belts that needed to be replaced every 60K miles.
