max owners with UR crank pulley...

I have the new UR ss pulley set on my 01 cl-s. upon further inspection of my stock pulley, i noticed it has a rubber layer, so i guess it's a vibration dampener. my car still runs very smooth w/ the pulley set, and it knocked over 3/10'ths off my et. I've heard differing opinions concerning replacing the stock pulley. UR says their pulley is perfectly balanced and it will not harm anything. Others have said these pulleys will cause bearing wear and crank failure. I noticed the maxima has a solid steel crank pulley. How can the maxima survive w/o the vibration damper? Any input appreciated.

I think BMW engines were more prone to crank problems with UDPs then our cars are.

.3 is really good! What are your times before and after? I bet your fuel economy is better too.

I WOULD NOT PUT IT ON A HONDA

I've heard a lot of problems with Preludes and Accord with the UDP. It doesn't matter upon brand (AEM, UR, Skunk) it's all the same. A lot of people with the pulley have had premature engine wear. Maybe it's from oil deprivation as the pump might not turn as much, or maybe it's the lack of a harmonic balancer.

As for me, I've had it on my 97 Maxima for almost 2 years and I've had no problems. It makes 1st and 2nd gear a lot better, but not much for 3rd and 4th. I also work on my sister's 90 Accord, but I don't think I'll consider putting a pulley in there.

On your Acura the rubber piece acts as a harmonic balancer. The VQ sewries engine imn the maxima does not use a harmonic balencer since the engine is allready perfectly ballanced.

my previous best time was 14.67 @ 97.44. after the pulleys and new tires i ran a 14.32 @ 98.09. this was my last run of the day cuz they were shutting down the track but my car was getting faster. couple more runs i could have hit 14.20's. if you wanna see the slips i got 'em.

The UDP's in the Maxima do not cause a problem because the crankshaft on the VQ engine is internally balanced, therefore no harmonic balancer is required.

Honda engines are not however, they require that rubber peice to operate correctly. From what I've read, the difference doesn't justify the engine wear.

A .3 second improvement from pulleys alone seems suspect. You might have also been having a good day at the track.

BTW there are some good Honda/Acura sights that are very knowledgable about these things.

Are you running the Comptech headers? In fact, what exactly are you running. My buddy who has a CL-S tried to tell me that the Comptech headers will make you put 300HP to the ground, but I don't believe that for a second.

your buddy is full of ****. even w/ all my mods i would guess i'm putting down less than 250 whp. yes, at certain rpm's i am putting out over 300 hp at the crank.

the .3+ gain came from the pulleys and a new set of tires, my 14.67 was run on studless snowtires.

i figure if the bearings wear out or the crank breaks i'll just get a mdx crank, rods etc. and run a stroker 3.5L. the tech at acura that installed my pulleys has a cl-s w/ the same mods as mine. he said he was going to run the ur pulleys also, and that it shouldn't be a problem. he has an mdx block he is working on for his car, he's planning un punching it out to 3.8 or 4.0 liters and turbo charging it. he's shooting for over 500 hp.
