Question for and or about car salesmen
Question for and or about car salesmen
Here's what i wanted to know. You know when you look at the car, test drive it, and they go "The car will run you this much; it's a steal at this price!. When you counter-offer them and they go, " Let me go ask my manager," do they really need to?
They know how much profit they will make, do they really need permission to sell the car at a lower price?

I doubt it. But it takes the tension off the salesman(they are supposed to be on your side) and onto management(supposed to be the devil) Good guy/bad guy type of deal. Standard sheit.
Just consider yourself being passed onto a "handler".

Or you just ask to talk directly to the manager instead of going through a middle man. My mom does that every time and the manager is so suprised they usually give her the price she wants.

when i sold for nissan i tried my best to earn the most commission possible. he was trying a bluff, to see how solid you were on your second price. why settle for less $$ (second offer) if the initial price could still be a possible. believe it or not people have actually renig on their own second offer and settle for one i present. why do people go into any dealership and expect the salesmen/team to give away the car. if you were selling car wouldnt you try to get as much for it as possible. (relative to the local market)
the easiest way to buy a car is to go in and make a resonble offer. after the test drive the vehicle presentaion tell the salesman that "x" is the price i will commit to, can you do the deal? 2 things will happen he will tell you to walk or he will make it happen.
some people get aggro with the salesmen cause he's tryin to earn a buck. to be honest most of the negotiations i have done could have been shorter if the customer jsut aggreed/commited to a price. from the beginning. i am not saying buy the car for sticker. if you already know what car and otions you want make on offer of what you think its worth to you.

This is the website for you (and everyone)
I think its like the good cop bad cop routine. If he comes back with bad news, he can blame it on the manager and pretend he is on your side when he actually isn't. But I would say he does need approval to sell below a certain amount.
I've walked into a dealership, and got one price (that was rediculous). Went home and called, spoke to someone else, and got a price quoted $700 over invoice.

the thing about talking to managers is tho, that sometimes "sales managers" aren't really managers... they're just other salesmen playing the part...
the person you wanna talk to is the FLEET MANAGER...
this is the guy that sells to businesses, but there is nothing stopping him from selling a car to you...
try calling ahead and setting up a meeting, when he asks what company you represent, just tell him the company you work for, and he'll usually give you a one time price, (his lowest price is his first offer), and you either take it or leave it...
but it all differs between different dealerships, but it's worth a shot... good luck!

Well casue what I was thinking the next time I buy a car is to tell the car, 'listen, i'll give you this, but if you have to go ask your manager, i won't be here when you return.' Whaddayathink?

Of course buying a Nissan is a little different in that the question really is how much under invoice can you get the car? To make a long story short, you should always be tactful when negotiating, even with a Nissan. If you want the car, and you want it at a low price, what's the purpose in snubbing the salesperson when he follows procedure?
My father years ago (about 20) found out how much he was willing to pay for a Ford Escort EXP. (for my brother) He called the dealership and asked what was the lowest price he would sell the car for. Dealer gave him the price. My father called back 15 minutes later and got another salesman and asked the same question. The saleman beat the first guys price by $200. Both were in the range that he wanted to pay. He then went to the dealership to buy the car. I guess the salesmen figured out what had happened by talking to each other. When my father arrived at the dealership, the 2nd saleman told my father that the original saleman would sell me the car for the same price. My father said, "no way. I asked him what was HIS best price. He gave me his best price and I'd prefer that you get the commission." The saleman said he couldn't sell him the car. "Where's your manager"! To the best of my fathers knowledge neither saleman got the commision.
I bought 3 cars by sending faxes
to about 30 dealers. I researched, test drove, and went to the local place to see what the 'demand' is for the car (if it's considered a 'hot seller' or not). Then, http://www.bigyellow.com and find all the dealers within your driving distance. I decided I'd drive about 500 miles for my Max.
Then fax-blast all of the dealers with the exact same letter... list the options you want including EVERYTHING (color, trim, specialty stuff, etc) and at the bottom put "I sent this to letter to 30 dealers. I'm willing to pay $x for the car. First to respond gets my business." Also include how to contact you.
I've gotten my asking price all 3 times, once while I was still standing at the fax machine, so I lowered the price on the rest of the faxes and got that lower price instead. Also, the local place was asking $4k over what I finally paid for my 2k2 6-speed from a place one hour away.

I've found the best way is to walk in with the kbb.com invoice prices printed out and offer them some small % over that. Usually they agree to my offer after they see I know how much they paid for the car.

My BMW salesman did the same thing by the way. I gave him a counter offer, which was a few hundred below his 2nd offer to me. He said "I will have to talk to my manager". But even before he left I knew they would accept it. The salesman asked me "Would you sign the papers today if we agree on your price?" All I had to say was "Yes"
