New Coils!

Well my car is at the dealer right now getting new coils and having the roters turned under warrantee I felt bad about all the free work I get done there so I am also having them replace the in cabin filter.

Ill post any difference I feel after the new coils. My car would knock and I would get a lumpy idle at times. Hopefully this fixes that. They also recomended using Chevron gas instead of Shell premium???

Anyway I am enjoying the G35 loaner for now.

Its an auto, but it is still a lot of fun. It has the manumatic trany wfich is cool, but I get a bit confused shifting into 2nd and 4th. I get in the mind-set of driving a stick and pull back (into 2nd and 4th), which on this set-up is to drop down a gear, So I try to shift, but nothing happens.

Yeah, I dont feel too bad any more. When I picked up my car I had a $200 bill waiting for me. Oh well... my baby is worth it. At least I got new coils and brakes for free... and I got to tear around in a G35 for a while.

Keep us posted please because I get some knocking but no rough idle.

I dont really notice any difference in power or smoothness. I am just happy to have more peace of mind when driving in a spirited manner.

The real differences should come this weekend when I install my Eibachs and Illuminas

Also, they recomended that I switch from Shell Permiuto Chevron Premium. Any body here have any experience/preference with this?

Oh and BTW, what I mean by rough idle is that I can actually tell the engine is running sometimes. Every once in a while I can feel a little shimmy through the cabin. I swear it was not there when I bought it.

I am probably being overly sensitive about it. It is nothing compaired to some of the other cars I have drivin.

I noticed an improved performance with my I30 when I switched from Shell to Mobil premium. Pinging iimproved, but didn't completely go away until I had all 6 coils done. Recently I did the following with greatly improved performance:

Berk Intake
Coils-all 6
Change ATF to synthetic (Mobil 1)
New MAF (updated version)

What is this updated MAF?

Oh, and did you just do a drain and fill on the ATF (yourself) or did you have it flushed?

The current MAF sold by Nissan for the 00-01 Max/I30 is of a slightly different design than the original. It is felt to be more reliable and many have felt an improved performance after the install. Some have had to install the new MAF because the original "blew" and others, like myself, just installed it for the peace of mind that its less likely to go bad and for the slight performance gains. (smoother acceleration and idle)

I changed my ATF by disconnecting the hose from the tranny to the radiator. What I did was turn the car on and drain 2 qts at a time, turn car off and put in two qts of the synthetic ATF, then repeat the process. Did this 6 times (used 12 qts of synthetic). It is felt this is almost as good as a professional flush and will replace most of the old ATF. Did make a mess at first when the fluid shot out all over the place. (I guessed wrong at which way it would flow when the car was turned on!)

Tranny does shift much smoother now. At times can't even feel the shifts. So it was worth it.

Is that not hard on the tranny to be running while draining the fluid? Doesn't the ATF lube the tranny.

Why not just drain from the plug? Im sure it has one.

Sorry, Ive just never heard of doing it that way before. Does anyone else have and oppinions on how to do the flush and fill

I'ver read about doing it this way at a few sites, and this site has a write up on it in the "fluids" section:

http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=149056

I didn't do the part about dropping the pan. Afraid I'd be left with a leak when I tried to put it back together.

I'm still surprised how better the shifts feel with synthetic. Never thought type of fluid would improve performance.
