I can't add anything to this thread except to ask for more info about my own noises:
2000 I30. I've had it 2 days. (Silver, 80K miles, immaculate, $8750 cash, great to have inlaws with connections!). I have what sounds like a starter dragging, usually only on cold (engine, not weather) starts. Also, whenever you kill the engine, there's some strange electric motor sounding noise under the hood that runs for 4-5 seconds. It has done that everytime thus far. Ideas?

Its you starter clutch no disengaging after your car has turned over. Mine does that as well. Dont worry about it when you car doesnt start then you have a problem. It something you cant get rid of unless you replace your starter all together.

Your 96 is going to need a starter, no question. EVERYONE on this forum with 96 or 97's has probably had to do it. (maybe even other years as well)
If yours has not been done already, it probably will die on you. I have not heard of anyone having a second starter fail on them.
It's no big deal for cost and for the reliability of the rest of the car, I'm thrilled to replace a starter when it needs it.
For now, drive it like you stole it and be on the look out for who has a starter for the cheapest. If it just started, I'm guessing you can probably get another year out of it.

I was wondering if anyone knows what this could be.... I was rear-ended about a week ago and the body shop is ordering the parts to fix my car. After being hit it seems as though my car runs a lot louder. I can barely hear the noise after getting up to about 35mph but anything below 35 it sounds like there is a humming noise coming from the muffler. The muffler was struck by the other car but only the extension tip was bent, not the actual muffler. The muffler shop put it on a lift and examined it and determined everything was fine. Does anyone know what this loud humming noise could be?

I have that sound too and I think I read in the manual that the sound is normal sometimes during startup. Maybe pressurizing the oil or something.
