Overheating while idling

My friend owns a 2000 I30t. It starts to overheat when it's idling for a couple of minutes. It would go up to about 3/4, which is right in between warm and hot.

Does anyone know what is causing this problem? Would it have something to do with the Engine Coolant Temp Sensor?

Thanks for your help in advance.

1. Did you check the coolant level?... There could be a leak.

2. If there is no leak, then some thing is malfunctioning... Either the termostat or the ECTS. Both are an easy fix.

Squeeze the outlet hose and see if the thermostat is working correctly. It could be a fan problem, check to see if the fan cuts on while idling

Thanks for the feedback. I'll check the thermostat. The coolant level is fine. There is no leaks or whatsoever. The fans does turn on while being idled.

Once again, thanks.

More than likely it's the thermostat.

How would a bad ECTS result in overheating?

Sorry not the ects itself but the other little sensor right behind it. It essentially displays the engine temp on the gauge cluster. If it were to be malfunctioning, the engine would not be actually over heating, but it would be displayed that way.
