"Sluggish/Slippery" acceleration in my '00 I30
"Sluggish/Slippery" acceleration in my '00 I30
Hello,
I need some help.
My car seems to be doing ok up until 3500-4000 RPM when all of a sudden it seems to be sluggish and struggling to accelerate. Its as if its slipping.
A mechanic told me that it may very well be a transmission. Its been like this for so long. At times in the past, it would be sluggish even at lower RPMs, However, now its during the higher RPMs.
If I floor it, it seems to be hesitating.
I tried to go to this link, http://vbxmaxima.8m.com/ecu.html, but my ECU/ECM didnt have that sticker with an arrow on it so I was unable to find which hole to I use. My ECU has two holes on the left.
Also, my check engine light doesnt come on. Can I still check for codes?
Why do you guys think it is?
Thanks,
Omar

Actually, this may an easy fix not involving the transmission. Shortly after I bought my 2000, a problem developed with symptoms identical to what you have described. The Check Engine light never illuminated and there were no codes. I took it to the stealership and they figured out it was the Mass Airflow Sensor or MAF. Of course, they were gonna shank me for some exhorbitant figure, so I declined the fix there.
Instead, I ordered the part from daveb, who is a member on this forum and a parts guy at a Nissan dealership in Austin, TX. It cost me a total of around $100 and an hour to remove the old one and install the new one. My car has run flawlessly ever since.

Couple questions for you:
1. Did you have to reprogram your ECU? Or was it just the plug and play type of deal?
2. Does daveb still work there?
I greatly appreciate your help.
Thank you very much.

Apparently, an ECU reprogram is recommended, but it seems to be unnecessary. I actually just disconnected my negative battery cable before I started the replacement. It took about an hour to do the removal and replacement (since I had never done it before, I took my time) and apparently, after an hour the ECU will do its own reset. So, without an actual ECU reprogram, it still worked out great for me.
daveb does still work there. The number is 888.254.6060. Ask for Dave B. and when he answers, identify yourself as a Maxima Forum member so he'll give you the discount. The part number for the MAF is 22680-2Y001. I still have my receipt and it came to $94.95. He had to charge me sales tax since we're in the same state. You won't get tax, but shipping to Chi-Town will probably bring it to around the same figure.
I was able to do some decent research on this problem by perusing the 5th Generation Maxima Discussions sub-forum. If you go through the stickies there, you'll see that this problem is fairly well-known. Here's a pretty good thread about it too:

I'm glad to help. I hope this is all you need. A transmission problem would really suck.
