Suspension problems . . . .

Howdy folks,

Its been 6 months since Ive had my I30 and have been happy with it besides the SES light, but we'll save that for another day. School will be done in a few weeks and its time to get around to things ive meant to complete on the I30.

Ive noticed since the day I bought the car that the suspension is not as tight as I would have expected it to be. When I drive over small speed bumps I hear a rattle from the front end . . when I drive over a crack or small pothole . .I hear the rattle. When I drive on the freeway . . I noticed that I hear a deep sound like when youre accidently driving too far off the road and those grooves make that hideous sound. At first, I thought it was the tires . .but I had them changed over time and still the same rough and loud ride.

If anyone could share their experience and how they went about fixing this, I would greatly appreciate it.

Also, I am thinking about getting some HIDs for the car . . 8000k . .anyone know any good places?

Thanks for reading . .happy driving!!!

Things to do this summer on my I30:
1. Fix the SES light
2. Get alignment
3. TRY to fix suspension
4. Get brakes done
5.Flush tranny fluid/Change motor oil
Whoooweee!!

The loud sound you're describing may be your wheel bearings? Do you hear the sound louder when driving on the highway(higher speeds)

DIY vs shop is always subjective upon your skill level. You'll need a good metric tool set (sockets and wrenches) sizes 10mm-19mm and spring compressors. A bench vise also helps.

For me its DIY and relatively easy... I've done complete suspension rebuilds on 3 different A32s.

If you say you're a novice then you better have a shop do it.

Ok .. . . i ordered the front strut bearings off a local website. So, it should be here in a few days. I noticed when I drive on the freeway about 60+ and go over little dips . . it makes my car jump significantly. I was shocked by how much it impacted the entire car . . lets say it felt pretty damn close to roller coaster ride. . . This is not normal at all. Well, I hope the bearing replacements smoothens up the ride. Otherwise, I really have to look into it. An i30 shouldnt drive this rought . . . . . .

chester86, let me know if it worked for you ... also how much did those front strut bearings cost you ? i'm sailing in the same 'boat' like you ... it feels like 'floating' over small bumps on highways going over 60mph ... i do have a FSTB too ... the struts look okk, no signs of leak or anything ... but they do have 139k miles of age ...

I bought two front strut bearing at Motorcarstld.com. Go into their online catalog and it will reveal all the prices, pictures, and parts. My I30 has about 118k on it; besides the suspension the car has been operating very well. I am just kind of frustrated with how much noise it makes when it drives and how bumpy the ride is. I havent tried locating a suspension shop yet, because some of those guys will just rip the hell out of you. I figured I would try asking the real source *here* at the forums and see if anyone else has experienced the same situation. So far, my first step is to replace the front strut bearings . . until then!! Good luck!

Did you get new bump stop/ boots too?

The bearings will not smooth out the ride... only new struts will do that.

I share your pain, cause my Aussie A32 Maxima (similar to your I30) have the same problems as well!!!

I sent the car to Pedders and enrolled in their 28 points suspension check. It turned out bad:

- Tie Rod Ends needed replacement
- Lower Control Arm Bushes needed replacement
- Steering rack is ****ed and needed replacement.

If you get knocking noise and vibrations when driving over bumps even at the slowest speed, these are the culprits.

With your engine off, try to turn the steering wheels and hear properly if there is any knocking sound, if there is, then the rack is stuffed.

I am depressed and annoyed, as the replacement jobs is going to cost a lot, we are talking about AUD$2000 here including labour.

As far as I am concerned, you can do the bushing at normal workshops, but if you send to Nissan or get the parts from Nissan, they do not sell the bushings only, they sell you the complete arm with new bushings and new balljoint and is a complete replacement to the old arm.

What do they do? Well, they are part of the car's suspension parts.

If anyone's been able to fix the ride quality of their I-30 and get rid of the Buick like ride, please let me know what you did to fix it? I dont want to start changing all the suspension parts only to still have it ride like a Buick.
