Thank you, sir. Sand with low grit to remove the curb rash, and smooth the metal back out with higher grit. After sanding, polish should bring the lip back to mirror shine. That's how you polish virtually any metal. That is how the face of the wheels were done.

Thanks a lot dude. What about more severe curb rash, where you know that when you sand it out, there will be physically less metal than before? Are you basically forced to sand that amount throughout the entire edge of the wheel to make it look balanced? Any special sandpaper you use on your wheel? What grit do you typically start from? Also what wheel polish do you use? Sorry for all the questions, but I really want to refinish my wheels this winter.

Yes, you will have to sand until it's smooth. My advice is: sand that area first and then gradually work your way outwards. It will look fine. I use an angle grinder, converted to a high-speed 50 grit sander. This step leaves major gouges in the metal, but it's super fast. Afterwards, I use 3M 3x sandpaper to smooth the metal out. I start at 60 grit and work my way up 2000. I use jeweler's rouge on buffing wheels (3-step) after the sanding. Emery, tripoli, then red compound.

I don't have close-ups of the rashes on the Works because they were not bad at all. Here are pictures of some JDM 3-piece Racing Hart C5's (fully polished now) that were purchased locally for $75! All the wheels looked beat up like that. Also, 2 pictures of my old SSRs.




I did the SSR curb rash with the wheel on the car. I was lazy to take the wheel off, because it was cold that day.

BTW: How are you able to buy rashed wheels without fear that the actual rim is bent? How do you check to see if a rim is bent? I bought a set of wheels the other day that appeared perfectly fine, however when I took them to get rubber mounted, the shop reported one wheel was bent.

The specs are 17x8 with 245/40/17 on the front and 17x9 with a 235/45/17 in the rear. Offset is +35 with a 8mm spacer in the front (+27) and 11mm spacer in the rear (+24mm). I could push the rears out another 5mm, but it looks okay to me now.

I hated the offset on the SSRs, btw. That's the main reason why I sold them. 18x8.5 with +35 offset in the front and +32 offset in the rear (with spacers). 245/40/18.

Another thing I want to mention is: most people on the .org get the wrong offsets for their Maximas. With a good offset/tire combination, the car will not have that tucked-in look.

They are eBay spacers. I wouldn't recommend running the spacers without extended wheel studs.

Hmm... Did you do the rear beam recentering at all? Because I put some 15mm H&R spacers on the rear with my Axis MODS and it would rub on the right side if I had a full tank of gas and I took a corner too sharp.

What is the best offset to get for the aggressive stance and no rubbing? I'm thinking about some 19" G35 wheels, not staggered. So, I'll would choose the fronts all around 19x8 or the rears 19x8.5. Don't know the offset off hand, but it's in the stickies.

It all depends on your offset, width and tire size(s). To run a very low (agressive) offset, tire size matters a lot. Just compare them to my specs, and you will not rub. I say mid to high +20s with a 9 inch width is good for the rear, and ~+30 with an 8 inch width is good for the front.

No, I am not. I am running Progress in the front and Maxspeed springs in the rear. I was rubbing when I was rubbing (on the inside) when I was turning lock to lock with a 5mm spacer in the front. With the 8mm front spacer, it eliminates the rubbing.

Thanks. 245/40/17 BFGoodrich G-Force KD in the front and 235/45/17 JDM Yokohoma/Advan Grand Prix M5 in the rear. It's quite sticky. The front tires set Tirerack's 1.09G record for cornering. I think a 350Z with a majorly upgraded suspension was the car that got that record.
