I doubt that gasket you have pictured is it at all.
Iirc that is just to keep dust and dirt out of the top.
Hardly anyone has that anymore.

So your hearing a loud "clunk, clunk" when your turning the wheel when stationary?
Have someone watch your mounts while you turn the wheel from far left to far right and see if the mounts are moving with the sound.

Sucks though..sorry man.

I would have agreed with cj about the dust shields, but you say it happens when your not moving, so it makes me wonder now too.

Yeah, those gasket thingies. Courtesy calls them "spacer-front strut insulator", which makes sense.

No, not a loud clunk clunk....more like a rapid clicking sound, ticktickticktick.

On break at work me and a coworker went out and turned my stering wheel, we COULD hear the clicking sound, albeit faintly, from the driver's strut tower, and NOT hear it as much from the passenger. Which makes sense, since the orange thing on the driver's side was shot to hell and not reused, but we reused the passenger one.

Watching the main strut bolt move with the steering wheel we could hear the noise on driver side and not on passenger. Torqued properly, btw. Best guess is that the driver's is metal (top of strut mount) to metal (wheel well) and that's the clicking being heard.

I don't have them on mine.
Most people don't.
No clicking/ticking here.
Oh~and it turned out my sound was just my sway bar end link when I thought I had bearing problems.
Mine was a squeak though.

I'll know more Friday but unfortunately the more I research the more it seems like my new bearings are bad so if these gasket things don't fix it I'm buying OEM bearings

So now that I'm silent whilst turning the wheel, next step is wheel bearing

Going over 40 I have a nasty humming noise coming from the front. My wife first noticed it a few weeks ago...good for her "Your car is too loud"

So it goes away when I make a RIGHT turn, and does not go away with a left...which would mean my LEFT (driver's side) bearing is bad, yes?

I'm going to buy the parts and have the shop press the bearing into the hub and just charge the labor...so what else do I need besides the bearing itself? Some threads say get a new hub, some don't...I'm only getting ONE, no sense in doing the other side (leave well enough alone, yes?)...

TIMKEN bearing part numebr 510009 (rockauto) for 30 bucks...not a bad price

and if I need the hub, the DORMAN hub is only 30 bucks from rockauto..

Would rockauto be OK for these parts or should I go OEM?

I replaced the hub... Shouldn't you just do that since it needs to be pressed in anyway? Take care of it while its out

yeah, I'm thinking the same thing now...just go new for both hub and bearing to be safe.

So after dropping the car off for the driver's front bearing replacement the day of flying out of town, I get a call from the shop that they replaced the bearing but the sound of a bad bearing is still there...FVCK

They diagnosed as RIGHT REAR bearing rather than left front...and my FIL had them hunt down a small trans fluid leak which they did and they say it's the driver's side axle seal.

So now I've gotta get another wheel bearing / hub assembly and axle seal now

OEM for the axle seals, I assume? 4AT trans

I read about bad diff bearings causing issues on driver's side seal but that's only on the 5MT not the 4AT which i have....correct?

I am pretty ignorant about the rear bearings.
Didn't know you needed a new hub for the rears when they went bad too.
Makes sense I guess.
I'm sure I'm due any day now with 190k on stock wheel bearings.
I've had to replace a lot of other things on my car though.
I used aftermarket axle seals.
Been on for 6+ months now and no drips.
Even using synthetic, but I'm MT.
..and yes, the bad diff bearings happen on the MT, not auto that I know of.
Autos are tanks.
Sorry for the news, and good luck!
It's only money.

I don't understand this at all? I guess I don't know what "buttons" you're referring to. Does this thread break some rules or something? Not being smug, just wondering.

Amerikaner, I've always liked that color. Only mod I'm thinking that is missing would be the Seahawks decal on the rear!

Good looking car though. You get it fixed?

no, this one was cleaned up, don't worry about it

Got the new hub assy and axle seal ordered, coming to the dealership this week, then hopefully I can get it fixed on Friday

Gotcha! Wasn't trying to be nosy, I just wanted to avoid that I guess, future reference!

Haha, My Max has all four (Longhorns, Cowboys, Spurs & Rangers) of my teams on the back. I may be 32, but man, I'll never get past my sports addiction! Plus, your car almost matches their jersey to a a T bro.

Nice, I hate when I'm in limbo playing the hurry up and wait game. How do you like that year of Maxima? I'm taking serious consideration to buying my wife that gen. She loves the blue and the green.

And it's a small world. When I lived up there I lived not too far from Bothell. I lived up the big hill of 164th street, between that and 128th. We use to shop in Mill Creek.

imo 4th gen is the best.

VQ30 is damn near bulletproof. 4AT is a rock, 5MT has input shaft issues. Light enough that it's got a lot of power and giddyup! Tight turn circle, large interior. I can get my wife, baby (with full carseat accutrements), and inlaws all in the car, while a tight fit it's doable (and done it before)...trunk big enough for about three bodies...

99 Specifically has NATS which could be a future issue with mine *knock on wood* but this color is "lakeshore blue", it's a 99-ONLY color so it's rare. And yeah, the color would go well with Seahawks swag on it, for sure.

My BIL is needing a car when he and my sis moveup from ABQ and I'm trying to get him into a 4th gen.

Nice man. Yea, I need an auto for the wife. I bought this Maxima for her initially (due to the baby) and I was going to buy a Terminator. She just cannot get the shifting down. So, I'll keep this as the daily driver and get her an auto. Trying to avoid all these cars to ship back to Texas next year as they're around $1500 EACH TO SHIP, so the Cobra will have to wait until we get back home. But whatever, she needs a car as well. After the baby we can't keep the "daddy drives everywhere" routine up.

Three bodies? Hahaha, awesome! Thanks for the 4th gen insight! I have a feeling that's exactly what I'll be buying.

It was technically Everett. It's been years, so bear with me here. If you were going towards Everett on Bothell Everett Hwy, you'd turn left on a 164th St where the Mill Creek QFC grocery store was. I think there was a bunch of little stores in that shopping center. Head on up the hill to Meadow or Meridian (it's been awhile). I lived in that area for a few years.

Small world man. I use to bowl at that Brunswick bowling alley at the top of 164th. I lived on Whidbey and in Everett. Not a bad place, just too dang cold and too much rain!!! Other than that, I enjoyed the area.

Hahaha, there was no Walmart when I lived there. It was next to a Jack in the crack though. In fact, we use to hit that JITB up on many of drunken party nights when my dad was out of the country!!!

That's too funny man, I use to have pretty big parties back in HS and I'd have pretty large packs of cars meet in the bowling alley parking lot. It got pretty wild back then. I had a 5.0 Fox in HS and we also used that lot for stang meetings. The good ol' days man!!!!
