My Massive I30 Revival and Build Thread

Ok, you got me

Say hello to "the replacement". It's a 1996 rust free one owner car (well, almost) from Southern California with 99k on it, and a spun rod bearing for $900 (plus shipping). While the rust on my car is far from terminal, it will never be rust free no matter how much I cut and weld. Given that I still need to paint quite a bit of my car (rear quarters, trunk, spoiler, roof, both bumpers...) I didn't want to go through all that effort on a car with rust. It took quite a bit of searching to find a car that met my demands, and while this car isn't perfect, I can definitely work with it. This is going to be a very slow process and won't even begin until my garage is remodeled, but at least I now have a rust free car to work from. I'll completely strip my car and send the shell to the scrap yard and this will be my car going forward.
Fancy!
A garage door opener on a '96? I thought these weren't available until '98?
Unfortunately, it has a sunroof. I wanted a slicktop like my car, but they're almost impossible to find. I may cut off my roof and weld it to this car.
All stock
Oh yeah
It's absolutely filthy
Hmm, isn't that the EVAP system from the later years? I guess that's how all CA spec cars are?
Look how clean those coolant pipes are! Look at the bolts for the heat shield!
So yeah, this car lived 31 years in salt-free Southern CA, but of course it gets transported here during a big winter storm and is covered in salt for the first time in its life. And it hasn't gone above freezing since I got it, so I can't even wash the poor thing.
I can't wait to begin
Fresh start, 30 years later.
Too bad it doesn't run. It would be interesting to see what a stock car does at the events you race in.
Cutting the roof off is insane. How much better could it be?
That Evap is typical for 96-98. I haven't seen many of the older fed spec systems with the canister where the ABS pump would be. I assumed that was 95 only, at least with a Maxima. The purge volume control valve is the newer plastic version and has a 99 IACV. Otherwise it looks like my old 96.
Does it have ABS?
The visors have the old warning labels and non rolling code logo, looks correct to me.

Sunroofs weigh ~30 pounds at the highest point on the car, take up headroom (important when wearing a helmet), and can cause water leaks. Rubbish!
Hmm, my fed spec 96 isn't set up like this, it has the giant canister under the ABS pump. I had always heard the 96 I30s were built more like the 95 Maximas, I guess that's an example.
Yes, it has ABS. But it will be getting upgraded

So I just attempted my first mod to the new car and failed. It didn't come with a keyless fob so I bought a used OEM one and tried to pair it, but couldn't get past step 2:
Close all doors, and lock
Insert key into ignition 6 times in 10 seconds (*hazards will flash twice)
Replace key into ignition and turn to ACC position
Press lock button on new remote once, hazards will flash
Remove key, unlock door
No matter how I tried, I couldn't get the hazards to flash after inserting and removing the key 6 times. Yes, the hazards do work. Guess I'll have to do some digging....

Hey JSutter, what's going on, has your account been hacked? Your name has changed and all of your posts are getting messed with. Please reach out to a mod if you need assistance!
Alright, got some good updates, but not enough time to post them all right now.
First up, after over a year of searching, I finally found a Cefiro mesh grille! It's the wrong color so I won't be using it yet, but I've got one!

I was also able to wash I30 #2 and get a better feel for its true condition. Turns out a number of body panels have been resprayed, but I haven't been able to figure out why yet. Overall the body is pretty good, but it will need some PDR work before it gets painted. Underneath, it's flawless. I've never been under such an immaculate car, there is just no rust on anything!
I did a quick detail of the engine bay and it cleaned up real quick.

And was able to get some side by side pics

The previous owner was nice enough to go to a junkyard near him in California and pick up a fender and trunk lid for me, and they're even the correct color! To make the car look less dumpy I installed the new fender and corner light.

Much more to come, just need to find the time.
