this thing must be my Supras brother in terms of never running right

hesitating could be a bad distributor, sometimes when theyre on the way out they act up when the cars warm and after it cools for 15 minutes everythings dandy again.

also triple check the distributor cap, had that on my Supra where it ran fine cold then when it was warm it started bucking and jerking. changed the fuel pump and everything, finally got furious george and started ripping everything apart. distributor cap had a crack on the backside, changed the cap and all was good after

You still have yours?

I'm not going to give up, it's only been at the shop and I haven't had time to look at it. Infiniti had it's fair share of maintenance too, time to get this ish on the road

New distributor was put in, with a new cap, and new wires. Ignition control module, and ignition coil are new.

He has constantly told me that there is something wrong with the wiring, but Idk doesn't make sense. PO did an absolutely F+ job with the wiring for the aftermarket stereo. Gonna throw that garbage away.

I'm really surprised, can one cap really make it all that bad? Hmmm, maybe I'll look again. It was hesitating pretty bad this time, it never did before

yeah mine was a brand new cap too, off of Ebay made in Italy. probably the problem lol. right where you tighten the cap down is where the crack was, got a OEM one from the back room of a old Japanese parts place that was a bit better material

yeah mines sitting in the garage, same thing i think theres a wiring problem somewhere giving it no spark. if i cant figure it out over the winter i might just throw a 7MGTE in it

Word man, I'm sure engine swaps are cheap for that generation as well

I might as well have done a 3SGTE or V6 swap man, I've already dumped more than what's necessary for either one. Problem is because it's at the shop. I want to do this on my own, but unfortunately don't have the time right now

Whatevs. I'm pretty motivated to get this bizash sliding through corners

So update, car is running BUT...will stall out when it gets fully warmed up. Mechanic said try and put in a different distributor

There is also a nice gasket leak on the exhaust. That's probably the source of my enormous power loss.

Going to wait and calculate the costs of every scenario so I know what action to take. Friends are saying upgrade the exhausts since I have to change a gasket lol...

Update, drove car around campus for 1 hour it eventually stalled again and wouldn't start, just crank all day.

That being said, I'm convinced the distributor. That's what everyone is telling me as well, so going to see if I can one from a forum member for cheap. Brand new they are $300

I was pretty ticked off that it failed, but driving it gave me extreme motivation to get it running again. Just feel so good driving it, plus all the truck drivers that tow the car give me compliments on the car lol

There is also an exhaust leak taht's a source of my power loss, but that should be a breeze

^___^

LET'S DOOOOO THISSSSS

I've dreamed of having a 2GR-FE SW20, but something keeps pulling me towards an AW11.

Keep on pushing man, its a neat car.

Ordered rebuilt distributor for $45, as opposed to a new one for 300. Installation is easy, just need to read up on how to adjust timing. I've never played with timing

Aight so my parts shipped in today:

Rebuilt Distributor by Twos R' Us (OEM - $300)
Ignition Coil - (OEM - $70)
Igniter - (OEM - $300)

All for $45 shipped from a forum member. Woot woot, installing it sunday. See how this goes.

Not going to be fun fiddling with timing after putting in this dizzy. Maybe mechanic fudged up timing, that's why it was so sluggish

its been a while since ive replaced a dizzy but cant you just mark how the old one is in with chalk? thats how i replaced the dizzy on my Supra, marked the angle of the old dizzy with chalk by the bolt, marked where the rotor was pointing, and put the new one in exactly the same way

That's what I was told as well, but since the car was running poopy last time I drove it I might as well correct the timing to eliminate a possible cause for poopy running behavior

Thanks for tip chrome

Hey chrome, my distributor cap was made in Italy. So if the car doesn't start with this new rebuilt distributor it must be the cap

So had an MR2OC forum member come out to help me. This dude is a boss, came at 7:30 and went ham on the car until 9. We narrowed it down to the main body harness and/or the timing jumped. He will source me a body harness and will help me check timing

This dude's car is freaking sick. 3SGTE swap with nothing but racing goodies. 300WHP, sounds gooddd

The day I bought it. Drove 80 miles to Pennsylvania to get it. Those 80 miles back were very happy times

I'm going to see if the guru can come next weekend to get the job done

Edit:

So I actually have a dilemma. the Guru quoted me $200 for the wiring job which we assume will fix the car. However, he told me he can do a 3SGTE (turbo) engine swap for $1500 which IMO is dirt cheap. Won't have any more engine problems. So here are my options:

1) Pay him the $200 and drive the car around as is, casually fixing up things
2) Pay him the $200, and wait 5 ~ 6 weeks to afford the swap. Have a turbo MR2 with some money to spare. He said he can do the job in half a day
3) Don't pay the $200 and wait 4 weeks to afford the swap.

Having a turbo car would be awesome, buttt right now I just want it running. What you think?

Hmm yeah I want to do the turbo but if I do it now, I won't have much to spare in case anything goes wrong. That's sound

guy sounds like he knows what hes doing, if it were my car i would just swap in a 3SGTE. current engine sounds like it has some funky problems, if you can pay for the swap comfortably in 4 weeks i would go for it. then you can part out the current engine and maybe recoup a few hundred bucks

Yeah it's a cheap price and my current situation does seem ideal for a swap. But I'm digging Amerikaner's suggestion on putting it off for now. I want to have a good amount in case issues come up with the swap

However, if I encounter anymore engine problems after this then swap time it is.

Confirmed the guru to come next Sunday to replace the harness. MAN I want this ish running now.

In the meantime our school's car club president had to replace the water pump on his 944 since the bearing went bad which meant all the coolant had to come out. He didn't give a hoot about draining it properly though:

Dan's water pump had to come out today. Bearing was bad.

I would rather just swap it to a 3sgte.

5sfe is reliable but its limited to performance.

I'm feeling to do this later rather than sooner. Possibly during the winter or next spring.

You're right though, can't do much with the 5SFE

TBH it's more than worth it to just get what you want done as soon as possible rather than band-aid fixes to keep it moving, prolonging the inevitable.

Spun a bearing in the I35 motor, didn't replace the bearings, didn't replace the motor w/ a stock one... just replaced the whole motor w/ 2nd gen VQ + 6mt swap.

See what I did there? Just did what I wanted instead of prolonging the inevitable and keeping a pile of 6mt swap stuff from collecting more dust.

Hmm true, but see this is what I have planned. If this fixes my non-start problem and I can drive it for awhile that will be awesome. If not, then I will definitely do the swap. Problem is I have to wait more to get the funds. It's already been down for 2 months -__-

My dirty was down for about 4 months for the swap, shouldve been done in one but I haven't had much motivation since I don't use it to get to work anymore.

Ignore what I had in this post, I'm a dumb@$$ and the price was for an engine. But this is what he told me:

"No you would need an entire rear clip of an mr2 for those which is around 3,000. This is just the engine ( dont have the harness or ecu). I was going to use the 5sfe trans and axles, This motor comes with the turbo flywheel which is all you need to mate to the 5sfe trans besides the turbo pressure plate. The shifter of a turbo car is un-needed in the swap unless it is a gen 3"

i thought the original price seemed pretty cheap, i thought maybe you just just slap the turbo motor in and use the old wiring or something to be that cheap. in that case it sounds like too much work to go turbo, i would just drive it as is

Yeah he's making up BS, I already read a lot on the swap.

Yeah I have my MR2 contact coming this Sunday to swap out the harness. I'm going to help him out, and after reading around that's the only factor left with my non-start problem. If this ish starts, Imma be SOOOO freaking happy!

I'm all talk right now, but if I get the funds I would like to do a 3VZ-FE swap. The motor is cheaper than the 3SGTE

Chrome, how is your supra coming along?

things still being a turd, think its time to pull the 4M and throw a JZ in it. dont really want to spend hours figuring out whatever electrical issue it has and the engines already tired. gonna have to wait, think the transfer case is on its way out in the truck lol

Thought so. Some people armed with knowledge can be predators or really nice, just depends on how they acquired their information.

That's the V6 right?

I was really seriously considering doing a 3.5 swap into a camry (pretty much what we do on the .org here, lighweight mid 90s famry sedan w/ 00's V6 power), it was nice because Toyota keeps their bellhousing bolt patterns the same for 4cyl and v6s, so I can get any manual camry, and use that tranny to bolt up to it

I just didn't have enough conviction/motivation to make the manufacturer change, and I didn't want to learn a new car for my daily.... And then I got the white nightmare..... fck.

Good ruck, fix yo ish get back to the cones and then man up and hit a road course!

It's alive! My friend did the wiring, fixed a ground, adjusted the idle, adjusted the springs because they were loose and not sitting flush at top and bottom, and took out my dumb cruise control all for $230

So happy, I put on 100 miles today, so...so far so good.

Friend took a pic of me. This guy was such a gentleman, drove 30 minutes from fairfax to deliver the car, and even put a little gas in. gave him a ride back and he lead me back on the route back to school. Lol his car was shooting flames = I Lol'd hard

We'll see how long it goes far crossed fingers

Most likely your issue was all grounding

Buy a grounding kit from ebay or wherever and ground the hell out of the motor and start saving for that V6/8 swap.

Probably but my guy said wiring. His price was so cheap that he had nothing to hide.

Ground, brakes, timing, glove box, etc. lots to fix but at least it's road worthy, for now...

Went to a car meet with some friends, and LOL I got compliments on the car. Literallly, one second after I get out of my car a guy with a camera says "MR2" and proceeds to take a picture. A lot of people would then look at the car, look at me, and nod their heads.

I AM SO COOL.

Needs a good wash and detailing
