Enough talk, progress time! My current brakes are warped so ordered new rotors and semi-metallic pads from NAPA.
My friend's father is the manager of the stores in our region so he got me four rotors and pads for all of them for a meager $140! Good rotors for racing, no cross drilled or slotted balogney

Going to do a coolant flush as well as an oil change next week when I get the time. Tbh I haven't checked the oil level since I got the car

Lookin' good Salman! I wish I could have made it out there last night, but it was not meant to be. Glad to see it's up and running well. There's one more rally-x in two weeks

Oh, and there's nothing wrong with slotted rotors, I'm putting on another set on the front of my car tomorrow Granted, my pads and rotors only lasted 15 months, but I attribute that mostly to the AX-6 pads

It's all good, nothing special anyway. Yes, I am down to make it to Summit Point granted that it's running that weekend! lol

I got you. Slotted is better than cross-drilled IMO since they aren't subject to cracking as much however I stick with the blanks because they are the most rigid. Oh carbotechs eh, hmm yeah those would eat up the rotors. Those and Hawk HPS pads from what I have been reading

So did the front brakes, but as I was taking off the bolt holding the caliper to its bracket, it snapped -____- Soooo I am going to see if my friend has the caliper and bracket from his parts car.

Did an oil change too, black as ish. Engine is much smoother now, less rattly. I'll post pictures up later

So like I said, did the front brakes. It was a pretty ghetto job, we did it in the school parking garage, we used a tripod and some random boxes to hold up the calipers, and people were staring at us as I hammered the hell away at the rotors to pop them off. Whatever I'm a student, and you gotta make due with what you have. I felt like a boss too -cool shades on-

The only mounting bolt for the right rear caliper snapped off, so car is sitting there until I can get a new caliper and bracket - my friend might have on from his parts car.

Big thanks to my friends for helping me out

Pretty upset, but hey got the front brakes on and an oil change done. Getting a few steps closer to start Auto-X!

Picked up an X-brace for the engine compartment and a glovebox for $20. Got an NA shift cable and 6 rotors for free; 4 front, 2 rear. Surface rust on 4 of them, but two front rotors are immaculate pretty much brand new.

I'm going to take caliper and bracket off to take to my MR2 friend. I hope the caliper is good and that the bolt can come out so that I don't have to drop cash on a new caliper.

YES I GOT THAT BOLT OFF!!!! Looks like the caliper and its bracket are on piece so disconnected the brake line to it and took it back to my place. Friend helped me out and whipped out his handy dandy vice grip, maxed torque the hell out of that thing and twisted the darn bolt out! Just as I thought we finished...

Have to twirl the caliper piston in, FUDGE! This thing won't freaking move with pliers. Went to Advance Autos snagged that joint and twisted, but MAN IT WAS SO TIGHT. It hurt a lot and I may have shed a few tears...

So tomorrow...going to run to home depot to get caliper bolt, reassemble all that ish, do the left side -friend was in the midst of doing them but ran out of time, bolts come off easy- bleed them brakes- back on the road!

Brake piston from hell

Unfortunately, yes. I thought it was seized for awhile, but got it in after much effort.

How's the progress on the supra? Been awhile since I've seen anything on that thread

might screw around with it this long weekend a bit, most likely a new engine will eventually have to go in it unless by some miracle i get the 4ME running again. still have a few things to finish on the Crown

i miss driving a 5spd horribly lol

5ME swap! 2JZ would be cool, but I can imagine the cost is up there.

Yeah, manual or nothing man :/ I feel deprived driving around in my roommate's CR-V

So good news! Bracket is not stripped, just one of my caliper mounting bolts! I was flipping out thinking I would have to buy a new caliper to get a bracket but nope.

Pic, stripped at end of bolt:

And I I have to get this caliper-bracket mounting bolt for the other side:

bad news: Don't know if Home Depot will have these bolts and I still have to bleed the brakes. Also not sure if I put in the pads right lol

5ME isnt leaps and bounds over 4ME, most likely it will be 2JZ. just has to wait because i still owe a bit of money on the Crown and i still owe a bit on the engine build

if the threads are just messed up on those bolts, you can get a tap and die set and repair the threads. ive saved the threads on many bolts like that, if the head of the bolt is rounded off theres no saving it though. some bolts hardware stores dont have

brake pads you cant really screw up putting in, usually the only thing that can be different on one side is the location of the squealer. even if you get the 2 pads reversed and the squealer is on the other side, it shouldnt hurt anything at all

Ha everyone goes for the 2JZ. I'm not surprised but thought you would just go for the 5ME since it was made for that chassis anyway. Ditto though

So I got my bolt. After I finished work at 9PM I was too excited to change and went to finish the work on this ish. But, when I get there it won't go in.

What??? I get so pissed because the bracket threads are messing up the bolt threads. On the verge of punching something, I decided to apply a hella lotta pressure on the bolts and finally I got them thangs in! Caliper is nice and snug against the rotor and the knuckle so it AIN'T GOING NOWHERE. BOO YAA.

I'm going to make sure everything is secure on both rear brakes. One of the rear bleeder valves opened with ease so hopefully the other will as well leaving my last job of bleeding brakes a breeze.

So got tired of the squeaking so took off front caliper again and what do you know, a metail clip has dug into the rear side of my rotor! Took that ish off and tossed it away, now there is no noise and damage is minimal!

All was good, until...

Now there is this windy sound coming from my rear right wheel. We checked the caliper and pads, they are on hella tight and seem fine. However, when trying to torque the wheel down with my lugs, we noticed that the actual lug beds are fudged up and I have to torque deeper than usual.

SHUCKS!

So going up to baltimore tomorrow to buy an OEM set of turbo rims with good tires for 200 smackers which IMO isn't bad. Doesn't hurt to have two sets of wheels either.

UGHHHHHHHHHH

Got a new set of OEM rims with used Nankang Toursport tires, decent tread. $200 which is ok, since the treadwear is high. Better than the bald tires I am rolling on

I'll upload pics later

They're not with me right now :/

I put my glovebox in today though, looks awesome!

So I felt courageous, and went for a quick backroad run afterwards. Took a right hand sweeper pretty fast on these salty roads and back end drifted out. Was pretty scared at first so jumped on the brakes at first then gassed the hell out of it so I could recover from it

MAN this thing is scary, I'm just going to wait until Auto-X to go all out. I know the MR2 is notorious for being tail happy, but man that was so unexpected

Lift off oversteer is what that car is known for it short DONT LIFT BE A MAN.

Investing in a stiffer front sway bar and aggressive staggered the tires and/or tire pressure can help with that tremendously, a couple of PSI lower in the rear helps with oversteer IIRC. To be honest it would be the first thing i would have done to an SW20 MR2 while i get use to its dynamics.

the joys of RWD, floor that throttle

one of the reasons alot of guys here drive SW20 for winter, engine in the back gives you some weight over the rear end and they handle amazing in winter

Makes sense, it's be fun in the snow. Don't know if I would want to drive mine, there it already a little bit of rust

There's this very annoying brake noise now at all speeds, it's coming from the back right caliper. Really loud when I turn left, but goes away when I turn right. Also goes away when I hit the brakes, squealing because really loud before I apply more and the noise goes away.

I checked all rotors, and the passenger side rear rotor has black spots on it, as if it has been burned?

Edit: Rear Passenger side caliper is stuck, I'll see if I can fix that ish

ive driven FWD, 4WD, and RWD in heavy winter. RWD to me is better than FWD as long as you have a LSD or locker. open diff can suck

you need to fix the caliper or else youre gonna wear the ***** out of your brake bad. you can try spraying stuff like Deep Creep around the piston to see if it frees it up, but you might need a new caliper. the joys of twist in pistons

i would say so. not even worth getting a junkyard one, problem with twist-in calipers is they seize with age like this no matter what really. best thing is a new or reman caliper

Hmm alright I'll prolly do that then. There is a guy in my area selling a two used rears for 72 shipped but I don't want to deal with sticking calipers again

I had an mr2 with a 3vzfe swap with a custom turbo job. Ran a 11.2 quarter mile time. The stock 4 cyl motors are garbage for the most part.

Ha no way, I love how the 3VZ sounds. You don't like the 3SGTE either?

I will get some pictures up soon. All at my home computer. I prefered the 3vz because it had such a broad torque band due to the fact it was used as a small truck engine. Mine had 100% torque from about 2500rpm to about 4500rpm. It made it a blast to drive.

I'm swapping in the new modern version of the 3vz sohc with the 5vz dohc 24v and it's up in displacement 3.4L and it's got modern ignition better power and gas mileage. Along with the trd factory eaton supercharger and trd e-locker rear diff. If you see some tacoma trd stickers on the end of the 'ol bed you'll have a hint of what's going on. Projects are fun. I'll see you guys on the track with the maxipad.
