For any sound guys. What results do you get by filling the box with a fill or insulator?

You can increase the theoretical volume of air in the box. But you can also decrease the theoretical volume if you fill it too much. And could burn up the speaker if the stuffing gets into the motor.

Poly-fill is the way to go.

I remeber reading way back when that you should put in a pound of poly per cubic foot. I think that was the equation, but as jmax said, be casreful not to over fill or else you will screw up the woofer, especially if that stuff gets into the motor.

jmax has it right..

the only times it should be used is if the box volume has to be smaller than reccomended, or you bulid a box, and decide it's too small for your tastes, you might be able to add poly to make it sound like a bigger box..

It's also real easy to try the sub with nothing for a month. Than add a 1/2 pound. Then add another 1/2 pound. Keep going if it keeps sounding better. Stop adding when the benefits decrease.

One way to keep the polyfill out of the woofer motor is to use spray adhesive and spray the inner walls of the enclosure, then drop the polyfill into the box. Shake it around and it will stick to the walls. Pull or cut out anything that looks loose or extends into the area where it might come in contact with the woofer.

One thing to think about when using polyfill in sealed enclosures is that when you use a small sealed box built (or bought) to manufacturers specs for small boxes, it normally is assumed that you will stuff it at the 1 lb. per cubic foot ratio. The manufacturers can sell you on a smaller enclosure size. If you do NOT stuff it, it may sound bad because the manufacturer designed the woofer and gave those box specs with that stuffing in mind.
