Car stuttering -muffler? -frozen gas pipes?
Car stuttering -muffler? -frozen gas pipes?
When I start my car and drive away my car stutters.
The RPM meter would go up and down from 0 - 2(x1000) repeaditly over and over. Frustrated I accelerate hard to see what happens, well turns out it won't go past 2500 Rpms for awhile (and my speed would gradually increase).
Then after a few seconds an instant burst would happen and I'd be at the 4-6(x1000)rpm mark and my speed would also burst.
After a while the problem will go away, probably about 10mins?
I checked my under the hood, no frost that my eye can see and the parts seem to work fine and the car isn't cold, like the engine etc..
In the beginning I thought my fuel line was frozen or something and water was getting mixed in as my car warmed up, but....
Today during the problem I decided to look underneath and discovered that white/transparent smoke (which looks like what would come out of the muffler) was comming out of the pipe that leads to the muffler, and they were, aswell, comming out at bursts (FYI the muffler seems to work fine)
I believe I lost some HP but can't confirm
Anyone have any inputs about this problem?

Clean the red temperature sensor connector connection. Use search to find the location. Info is also in the *cough* stickies *cough*
Sounds like your car is not going into the proper cold start program and once it's warmed up, it drives okay.
Also, see if the dist cap is wet(inside the cap) BEFORE you start the car in the morning.

Man my car is doing the same thing. But its been doing this since I bought this car Dec 13. About 5 times a week. I've never look under the car when it happens, I'll try that. I don't know what to do.
Thanks for the reply
I couldn't figure out where exactly this red temp sensor was
I did a search for heat soak and red temperature sensor and found only 5 threads. The best description of the location of the sensor was by Sawby4president:
so I took the liberty to illustrate where they could be

is the red temp sens at 1, 2, 3, 4, or somewhere else?
Also this is where the smoke is comming out from, does this have any affect on my problem?

"I had a '91 with a VG and I never bothered about the temp sensor, but I know on my '94 DOHC VE it's between the cylinder banks, toward the front bank, in front of the throttlebody assembly on the driver's side of the motor. There are two, a large red connector that goes to the ECU, and a smaller black one in front of that which goes to the temperature gauge. I have a hunch the set up is different on a VG, but the connector would probably look the same - a square-ish red thing with a black wire on top."

FYI in my opinion it feels as if I lost some power. I dont know from what tho. My car is kinda beat up as well it can be anything, or it could be psychological
meh
hope you get it fixed your self, check out that 02 sensor changing thread. Matt had a good DIY explaination of it all
oh, I also changed my Centre pipe, it had 3 holes in it (an update for one of those pics)
i had that problem before and i think its because the distributor cap is wet! thats what happened to me and i ended up having to buy a new distributor cap for like 300 or something to fix the problem. good luck in solving your problem.
