HELP-brake groan when backuing up

Put Raybetos Quiet Stop pads on the rear on Saturday. Cleaned, scrubbed and regreased everything. Brake pads are great, stop nicely and no noise - except when backing up.

They don't make noise first thing in the morning when they are nice and cold, but by the time I drove to the office this morning and backed into my parking space - it sounded like a city bus groaning when it stopped.

Did I miss something? I pulled both mounting pins and cleaned and regreased them. New pad clips. Used the Raybestos shims and gave the back of the pads a coat of brake quiet.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

This site will give you the symptoms but not the cure.
http://www.nissan-techinfo.com/nissa...9.asp?mscssid=

"This incident can be caused by a slight tension on the parking brake cable resulting in the brake pads not withdrawing completely from the surface of the rotors after release of the brake pedal. This contact results in a low frequency groan or humming noise."

Now you can purchase the TSB (NTB99031) which should outline the factory "cure" but I am curious if someone might have this information. One would imagine it has something to do with the parking brake cables, but again, would be interested in the factory cure.

I have a similar problem with my left rear caliper. It seems to become seazed after long or hard driving. It's not totaly though, just enough to make a loud humming sound. I got in there to see if it was the
E-brake. I unhooked that and it still does it. I also notice a little more brake dust on that wheel. So I will more that likely have to replace that caliper. That may be what yours are doing beause I notice mine doing it a little at a time as well.

I don't know about both cases, but sbmax95 it sounds as though your rear calipers are going bad or were not installed properly. The piston inside the rears has to be screwed in. Both of my reasrs went bad. Had meinkei rip me off for the first one, then I got one from advanced auto parts and replaced it the other myself. I had the same symptoms as both you guys and they just progressed. The rim would get really hot and then started dragging the wheel at it worst point.

I wonder if I put a light coating of grease on the surface of the clips on which the pads ride to keep them from catching?

Thanks for the TSB. I hate spending the cash, but I might have to. Strange thing is that it only happens in reverse and only when I apply the brakes, not after I release them.

Then again, new calipers might be in order. Sad part is that the car only has 37K on her.

Having just spent $450 for a four wheel brake job and an alignment at the dealer, the development of this symptom in my car as well has kinda ****ed me off...

I don't know if these are the same issue. The sticking caliper noise is a constant grinding. largestal's seemed to me like it's an abrupt noise when he stops, or perhaps releases the brake pedal. I've noticed this in a few automatic cars (it especially reminds me of my roommates Grand Cherokee).

And in my car...but really only when I release the pedal on an uphill incline, or come to a full stop on a downward hill.

largestal, tell me if I'm wrong. The noise I experience is very city-bus like

city bus - yes. But only when I back up. It vibrates enough to shake the mirror. It gets louder when I hit the brakes.

I am going to tear it apart tonight and check to see if the pads are sticking or if it is caliper related. First time this has ever happened to me and I am stumped.

i had that same problem it feels like the car is locking up but after awhile the problem went away i'm thinking that I tightened the ebrake cable too tight and it finally loosened up.
