what year tranny will fit my max

I have a 91 max with 5-speed manual, I pulled tranny thinking TO bearing was all I needed to replace, but when the TO bearing went, it broke off part of the tranny housing around the input shaft. I was wondering what all models tranny will fit my 91

any 3rd gen tranny will fit, however the 92-94SE's are abit different. You will have to buy new axles and spindles and everything inbetween because they use larger axles.

For a direct replacement, 1989-1991 Maxima SE trannys.

Do you have the ability to take a picture of the broken tranny? I'm curious to see if its the same area where mine was broken.

i believe the 5spds from 85 to 88 also fit at least we useds a 5spd out of an 87 in my friends 91 for the conversion the only difference from my 92 is it didnt have a fill plug on the side and the braket that holds the shift stabilizer rod is different plus they are plentiful and cheap so its another option

Thanks, I will post a pic of where it broke tomorrow, there is a lip around the input shaft, about half of the lip broke off, I am pretty sure it is not fixable.

PS subs what did you guys do for the shifter support bracket.

it's fixable, as long as it doesn't get into the tranny seal or anything.

a good machine/welding shop sould be able to weld it back together and grind it down so it'll work. probably cost at most $100. much better than another tranny.

I am not sure about the 2nd gen tranny and if its any different.

The 92-94SE transmission WILL bolt up to the engine, however it uses larger axles, so you will have to replace the axles, along with the spindles.

if you go to a junk yard and find a second gen 5spd look at the engine plate thats front center of firewall and it has the trany and engine code if the trany code is RS5F50A it is the same as the 89 to 91 se 5spd so then yes it will work and like i said my friend has one from an 87 in his 91 gxe right now

just stick a screwdriver in the shifter shft and go threw all the gears in each gear spin the input shaft and if the differentail spins smooth and at the proper speed in diferent gears it should be fine although im not sure if you can detect bearing or syncro problems like that but atleast you know its not completely bad
