Porting ECU codes and car monitoring to a PC

Ok, can I get a scanner of some sort that will hook up to a PC? As some of you know, I'm doing a pc-in-car mod and want to integrate the car's systems with mine. Doing speed, mpg, distance etc would be helpful. Any ideas? EDIT: nevermind, I'm making good progress.

You'll probably have to have some sort of ODBII scanner that offers some type of PC software interface thru a serial port. BTW, I found this: http://www.scantool.ca/wgiobdiihw.asp . Hopefully this will stir you in the right direction. Good luck!

Most definitely!!! Primarily because scanners/consults run under a proprietary platform (OS), such as found in something like a palm pilot. The only way to get a palm pilot to talk to a PC is via a software. The software is what translates information from one platform to another, in this case: ECU to PC. But things are much complicated to get that to work.

I haven't had a chance to look around the website I posted but have you found out how much their setup costs? I would imagine it costs a lot of money since this is the kind of stuff they use in the professional racing world. The race car's engine status and info can be monitored via some type of wireless technology by someone, most likely the race car mechanics, stationed in the pit while the race car goes around the track.

i want to do the exact same mod in the near future....so helaesus2, just let me know how this all works out! this would make the car like a skyline in a sense....real time readings of injector position, timing, A/F ratio etc.....would be pretty cool to have that all displayed on an in dash 7" microvision display coming from a hidden laptop that is connected in some way to your car's ecu...!
