Is it harmful pouring water into engine room?

yes, i was serious, thats why i was asking...at some it has an engine cleaner you can select, so thats why i asked the question. sorry for being a dumba$$

 

I used to do this with my Explorer all the time, never had a problem. I just covered up the alternator and the battery, and a few other things and went to town. Never had any problems. (might be different on the maxima). I just made sure it was cool enough however so I didn't crack the block.

 

You should never ever hose down a hot engine. Ever....

i think they clean the engine with steam and degreaser but I'm not sure. I don't like the idea of just pouring water over it. It's most likely not gonna clean crap, just make the engine have concentrated dirt spots, damage some electrical component or cause rust formation.

 

Maybe OT, but this reminds me of a kid I once saw driving an old Celica with no hood. What would he do when it rains?

 

I spray it every now and then at the coin-op car wash, no problem. Just make sure the engine is cool or barely warm (I take it right around the corner, never gets even warm) and don't blast anything with the jet close. Definitely put a plastic bag over your HAI if you have it.

When you go to a coin-op, don't press the spray lever, just let it drizzle onto the engine bay. Then you can turn on the rinse cycle and let it drizzle the water.

 

i cleaned my engine just yesterday.

Make sure to cover the alternator, top of battery and any open inlets (intake, etc). hard water can conduct, and although it wont create a fire, it can drain the battery. i used ceran wrap.

cool engine, sprayed it down with 100% Simple Green. Soak. Sprayed again, and scrubbed down all the stuff that wasnt readily running off. sprayed the simple green and grease off with a light mist on the hose until totally rinsed.

LET DRY! i left the hood up in the sun all day (gotta love san diego!). started it up, no problems.

i have been doing this for years, never had a problem (except on my SE-R when i forgot to cover the distributor. strangely, a wet distributor doesnt work let it dry, no problems)

 

do wat i do and drive it into the ymca pool, man that chlorine is strong.

 

 

Anyhow.. I usually use Simply green on the engine, when it is cool and let it set coating all the grease for 5 minutes and then I spray it down with cool water. Does the trick, only thing I havent figured out is how to grease the hoses properly *no armorall*

 

used to do it on my 94 accord, cover the alternator, starter, fuse boxes, and battery make sure the engine is barely warm, and use as little water as possible, scrub the grease free after you spray it with degreaser, that should do the trick, but i wouldnt recommend doing it because there could be an exposed wire anywhere

 

its safe if u know what ur doing, cover ur intake if u have one, and just spray away, i did it not to long ago, i used a degreaser and some other soap stuff and i washed it down. it came out preaty good.

 

Whats wrong with that? i got a full membership at the YMCA plus i use the guest pass for the max.
