So I had the place racing cold air intake for about two years. I was one of the people that got stuck with a monsterflow air filter. I used it, and even cleaned it a few times, but never replaced it. After people started saying good things about hybrid intakes, I started looking for a cheap jwt pop-charger. Finally picked one up a while back for $50, cleaned it, and finally converted to hybrid last week.

Here's my impressions:

The PR CAI gave more low-end grunt than I thought it did. Now after switching, I actually feel the difference and notice it. The biggest thing was the noise. I loved the PR CAI sound. I'm not sure what it was. People, even those with PR CAI's would tell me how incredibly loud mine was. I'm starting to think it was the Monsterflow's doing... And of course, now im not remotely worried about big puddles (wasnt really worried before).

The hybrid setup took a bit away from the low end and obviously gave it to the high end. The gain is not hugely noticable to me, and certainly doesnt seem to match the loss of low-end. The sound is just kinda weak, not impressive and throaty.

So given those differences alone, I think I would go back to the PR CAI. But here's why I'm torn.. The hybrid setup is easy to clean and vibrates less. It's also good for smog inspection because I will get a lot less hassled if the guy can see the air filter (vs it being in the fender). This is kind of a big deal because the PR CAI is not visible, and being down in the fender it's *really* hard to get at it to inspect / clean the filter. Also, as I mentioned, the PR CAI vibrated more. There is physical distress to the intake tube and to the engine bay where the two pieces would rub together, making lots of crappy sounding noise. And speaking of noise, if I put a real K&N on the PR CAI, I'm not sure that I would get the sound and feel that I'm looking for as compared to the Monsterflow (which I will not use again).

... Just had to get that off my chest.. Not sure what I'm going to do.

 

for some reason my K&N was louder than my monsterflow. Its all up to you about the switch though.

 

With the PR CAI you can use it in hybrid mode, not necessary to buy any other parts. Just remove the pipe that goes through the fender well and put the filter on the end of the maf.

I used that setup mostly after trying both ways. For racing I butchered the long CAI pipe and ran it to the headlight.

 

How much of a difference can you tell between the two locations of the pipe? Have you ever dynoed the differences?

That's essentially what I did, except I bought a JWT pop charger to use as the filter because it has a velocity stack. There is no way for me to bolt my PR CAI filter to the MAF. I'd have to fabricate an adapter plate.

 

they sell adapter plates, actually your CAI comes with the adapter plate that you can put the monster flow as a hybrid
