WTH? While at the pump....

Okay, I'm confused. It says our cars hold up to 18.5 gallons of gas, but while I am at the pump, I hit the lever to let the pump automatically gas my car up. It stops at just a little over 15 gallons. That is when I run my car until the light stays on for a good 10-15 miles. I went to a different gas station(same company) and it let my car fill up with 16.3 gallons of gas. WTF?

Can I squeeze 2 more gallons of gas in there? Is that why I'm only getting 300-320 miles to a full tank of gas?

What do you guys recommend I should do while filling my gas tank?

I put in about an extra dollar of gas so .5 gallons or so after the thing automatically stops. I ran out of gas once but I can't remember how much it took to fill it up afterwards.

Mike, crackhead, when the light goes on you have about 2-2.5 gallons left.

I like how you get mad at people for asking and posting about skylines all the time yet you yourself ask a question that has been covered a million times. Did you stop for a second and think that all the pumps aren't the same? One might have a longer nozzle, one may have a more powerfull flow han the other. Maybe you burned more gas than the previous time and the fill up wasn't the same.
Here's something you should think about. If you like your car, fill up wheenever you get to the 1/4 tank mark.

isn't it healther for your fuel pump to keep filling at about half a tank as opposed to say buying a half tank near empty and keeping it on the bottom half of the tank?

less work for it to do means longer life, seems like simple concept to me ...

i drive to amherst once a week (140mi each way) last week I filled up immediately before leaving, and immediately after getting off the highway, and after doing the math I figured it to be about 27mpg on the highway.

my car just uses copper ngk's, hacked airbox, k&n filter, and i was driving with probably an average of 80mph, sometimes a bit faster .. you know how it is ( the flow of traffic )

then figuring out my mileage from around town for two days in amherst + my drive home worked out to be about 25mpg; which isnt really an accurate average since it was only like 20 miles around town and 140 on the highway.

my .02

i never fully filled my tank, i usually put in about 20 bucks of gas when it gets to the 1/4 line and it brings it up to a bit over the 3/4 line, and that is a little more than 9 gallons, but i don't think that is an exact indication of how many gallons of gas u have in the tank cause when its full the meter goes down faster till it gets halfway and it slowly inches down.

i think what happens is that the fumes fill up the rest of the tank and u have to let those come out before u can squeeze more gas in there but i doubt its anything near 2 gallons.

however, when the light goes on, u still have about 2.5 gallons left which makes sence.

15+2.5+1 (fumes takin up space)= 18.5 !

I found out the hardway you have about 2.5 gallons of gas from when the light comes on. This however is subjective. If you are going up a hill or around a corner the light will come on even though you have say 4 gallons in there. Fill up, drive till light comes on, fill up again. Divide miles driven between filling up by number of gallons it took to fill up. That will give your mpg. It's not that hard. If you are only getting 300 miles per tank and filling up with 15 gallons you are getting 20mpg (not good). If it only takes 12 gallons then you are getting 25mpg. Don't go by one tank full either. I figure my mpg every fill up. It is a good diagnostic tool. If you all of a sudden get bad gas mileage you may have a problem. I average 25-26 on mixed driving. I filled up with that new V-Power crap and got 20. Went back to Mobil and was back to normal. If I hadn't have been looking I might still be using the worse gasoline(atleast for my vq).

Can I recommend some simple logic? Now what do you think would happen if the tank was truely empty when the light came on??? Think about that. So when the light is on, there is still some gas in there. Now all gauges are different so let's just assume that when the light is on all the time, the tank has maybe 2 gallons of gas. Now what kind of mileage are you getting?? Let's say 20 mpg. So what does that mean? That means when the light is on, you can drive approximately 40 more miles.
So take your example. You went 10ish miles. And you put in 16.3-ish gallons. Sounds about right?
