New to the VQ: Have Mass Air Flow issues. HELP!

Hello,
I have a 2000 Infiniti I30t and after spending some time at the stealership, I have learned that my Mass Air Flow Sensor is faulty. So, I would be grateful for the expertise of you who know the VQ. Here're my questions:

1. Is there any way a faulty MAF would not show an error code? Apparently, it didn't show up.
2. Is a Mass Air Flow Sensor the same thing as an Air Flow Meter?
3. Is it difficult to replace this component?
4. Any suggestions on where I can find a new one inexpensively?

It'll be nice to get this fixed and avoid the exorbitant costs at the stealership.

Thanks.

it's conceivable for the MAF to malfunction without tripping the ECU off enough to throw a code... eventually it would though.

2. yes
3. no. but you may have to get the ECU reprogramed and thats like 2 hours of labor at the dealership and you need special equipment to do it on your own (anyone know any more about this procedure?)
4. no idea

Thanks Matt. Under what conditions do think the ECU would need reprogramming? I was hoping that it would be a simple matter of replacing the AFM and that would be it.

Whatever is exactly right.... Take a poll and see where people prefer...

Regardless, what were the price differences so others can know?

Well, "Who is cheaper" is a moot point now. I ordered one from daveb this morning. Now, can anyone talk about why the ECU would need reprogramming after the MAF replacement? Is it absolutely necessary?

I have never been able to find out why the ECU should be reprogramed. When I replaced my MAF last year I did not bring it to the dealer to be reprogramed. I just unhooked the neg. battery terminal while I replaced the MAF, then hooked the battery back up. No problems since.

The TSB on the MAF issue has ECU reprogramming as the final step. As I read before, MAF's hot wire's temperature is controlled by the ECU. Since its a new part(new MAF installed has a different part number), ECU needs new instructions on how much to heat up the wire and how to interpret the new readings. The new MAF will work without reprogramming, but I also read that it is more likely to go out again soon.

Okay, for those who care, I got this problem resolved. I ordered the part from daveb. The cost, including shipping and tax was $94.95. The replacement of the part is pretty straight-forward. You only have to remove the airbox, which is easy with only five bolts and one hose clamp to manipulate. I did disconnect the negative battery clamp to allow the ECU to reset. As it turns out, a Mass Airflow Sensor and an Air Flow Meter are the same thing. They have the same part number. After I got the replacement done, the behavior of the car was dramatically improved. Acceleration is much stronger and sharper. The stealership wanted to shank me for $450, so being able to do this myself was nice. Thanks daveb!
