Considering purchasing a Maxima would like some advice.

I'm coming from 92' Acura Legend and maintence costs have just been a lil too much with such an old vechile. Anyways I know car forums are great I been on acura-legend.com for a while so I come here to get some info.
Basically I'm trying to purchase either 98-02 maxima GLE and I want to know which years are more reliable and what type of maintience schedule Maximas uses and prices and also what are common problems I need to look for when i'm doing my car search.

Thanks I know this has probably been asked alot but since I can't search for old message I"d appreciate the help

get the 2k2. you can thank me later. but really to answer your question, a lot of people will argue that the 98 and 99 model year (4th gen) engine is more reliable however with the 5th gen 2k2+ you get the 3.5L motor and the performance is off the chain with this motor. i can't say i've had any serious problems yet and its still running like a champ. personally i also like the way the 5th gen looks over the 4th gen as well. a little more aggressive.

The SE can come with every single luxury option that the GLEs can. The only item that wasn't an option when I bought mine was the "wood grained dash" (nasty looking). I have leather, heated seats, sunroof, BOSE, and heated mirrors in a 5-speed. Every option.

since you are comming from a ledgend, i would recoment a 2000+ maxima. it more of the luxurious feel and updated interior over the 99 and older ones. i would consider the se over the gle, just my preference.

the 98 and 99 are a bit more sportier, feel lighter, but i personally perfer the 00+ interior. the 00+ feel just a bit too big, and im 6 foot tall.

as for relaibility i would guess all 3.0s are the same (95-01). the 99s are known for coil problems, 00s bad rotors and sometimes MAFs. there are other issues on all maxima, as with any car!

i have a 2000 but still not sure if i like the 98 and 99s better, i really like the 98 and 99 but maybe if i had that id like the 00+ more, each have their own good points, just depends whats better for you. hope that helps.

DO not get the GLE, i swear you will regret it!

i got GLE thinking is top of the line and stuff, but i gotta tell you, i regret it to my heart.

the only thing that gle brings that a se don't, is the wood dash, but u can get you from ebay for around a 100 bucks.

SE comes with smoked taillights, which look hot. GLE tail lights are ugly.

if possible do not get the so called "premium" bose system, it sucks major a$$.

and if possible try to get 17" wheels, so much better than 16".

god....i wish i coulda known all this before gettin my GLE......ahhhhhhhhh dang it!

depending on what kind of legend you had, if it was a type II then, yeah to brinng yourself back to that output power w/o a doubt 5 gen. but if it was not, then still a 5 gen, and find out what you have been missing.

Here is some advice! Do it! The Maxima is so much car for the money and so good looking, I mean the Camry is so farty! You have to be 70 to drive one! I looked at the Volvo, Audi, Caddillac and many others and the Maxima is such a great car and value!

GET a 5th Gen!!!! Can't go wrong with the look, power, and overall drive of the car. Def get an SE, NO GLE OR whatever else. I have a 2000 Se and i love it!!! I know you will too, but just remember if you get a 2k2-2k3 they do come with the HID which was mentioned above and they do have a very very high tendency of getting stolen - just something to keep in mind. That is actually the only reason i didnt buy a 2k2 and i couldn't find any 2001 Anniversary Editions so i went with the next best thing.

i don't see why all of you are so stuck on the se. i have a gle and there's nothing wrong with it. i can guarantee you my gle will blow the doors off your se in both performance and luxury. so stop knocking the gle.

well performance wise, all maximas are the same (if they r in same genereation)

as for luxury, besides the fake wood trim (nissan calls it "simulated") what else is the difference between se and gle?
TCS? you can add it to se
ride confort? not much difference, se is a lil rougher ride tho

i don't see any other differences.......oh yeah, the GLE costs more!

oh please you are the one who is trying to rule out this guy getting a gle. so what if he wants to get a gle?? is it your car? no! so why do u insist so much for him to not get a great car? let him do as he wants even if it means not getting a SE and a gle instead.

I just bought a 2002 SE. I don't know much about the GLE, but I can tell you that I love my SE! I had to get a four door car with a kid on the way and I hated to give up my coupe. That was until I drove my 02 SE. That was it for me. I understand that the GLE is the more luxury version and the SE is the sport version, but since they are both Maxima's, you can't go wrong. I did a lot of looking when shopping for a 4 door and the Maxima was the best on reliability, style, power, ride, etc. Here is a list of cars I looked at: 05 Subaru Legacy, 03-05 Toyota Corolla and Camry's, 03 BMW 3 series, 01 Mercedes Benz C240, 03-05 VW Jetta and Passat, and the 04-05 Mazda 6. It was a long process, but the Maxima SE won and, I am happy to say, is sitting in my garage!

I've owned both geratiosn (4th and 5.5) I will tell you that it all depends on what you want it for. For luxury you can get a GLE, which all come with automatics from the factory. If you're into performance and you have an auto, it doesn't matter if you decide on the 2k2 which is a 5.5g, because of the added torque, you get similar results. I do regret not getting a 5spd with my 4th gen, but all of the mods I've done to it, I'm happy with it. IMO the 95-97 seem to be the most reliable, due to 2 reasons, there has been many issues with MAF/Coils etc with 98-02, and second is due to the 95-97 are the oldest so they've had more time to prove themselves. My 95 has 224k on it, and has been the most reliable car I've seen in a long time, with routine maintenance it will run on for a very long time. Judging by what you first entered, that you want a GLE, and the maintenace costs were eating you alive, leads me to believe that modding isn't your #1 interest as you do not perform maintenace on your own, so like any other vehicle, it will be pricey to maintain your Maxima, any generation, that's why I choose to do all that on my own, saves money, and builds a better understanding on your car. Everyone is correct in stating that the SE can be had with all the options of a GLE, except wood grain ans the GLE cannot be had with a manula transmission. I chose the SE because of its more "sporty" look, colored door handles etc. Guide yor purchase towards what you want to use it for. If you read all stickys thoroughly, and the FAQ's more imortantly, you will learn a lot, and hopefully base your decision on facts instead of opinions.
