JWT ECU for 95-99 Maximas: Is this how it shakes out?
JWT ECU for 95-99 Maximas: Is this how it shakes out?
Ok, I'm talkin about JWT modified ECU's ONLY. (cuz that is the company I'd go with). Is this how the ECU predicament shapes up?
95 Maxima: ECU can be reprogrammed
96 Maxima: ECU can be reprogrammed
97 Maxima: Need to send in 95 or 96 ECU to be reprogrammed and take out the stock ECU.
98 Maxima: Need to send in 95 or 96 ECU to be reprogrammed and take out the stock ECU. CEL comes on for rear O2 sensor malfunction
99 Maxima: No hope whatsoever.
Ok, if the above data is correct, is it worth it to send in a 95 or 96 ECU for my 98 Max 5speed? Who has done this? Is the CEL the only drawback?

There is hope for the 99. you just need to do a little modifying to the wiring harness.
MardiGrasMax is the only person I know right off the top of my head that is running a JWT ecu in his '98.

CEL in '98 can be avoided by buying the different rear O2 sensor used in the 4.0 gen instead of the one that came in the 4.5 gen. I believe the 4.5 gen is 3 wire and the 4.0 gen is 4 wire. I am not positive about wires and such, but I do know that the reason the rear O2 sensor light shows is because they're completely different from 4.0 to 4.5 gen.

If that's all it takes (get a 95-96 ECU and rewire a 4th gen rear O2 sensor), why does it seem like ppl always crying about how there is no hope for 1998s (or even 1999s for that matter)?? Is it because no one wants to go to the junkyard and end up installing an older ECU?

The biggest lesson I have learned here is that anything is possible with enough money or enough work. Unfortunately, because this is a forum, anyone can post and those intelligent posts get buried beneath all the BS newbies and know-it-all's spew.
For a 98, use this:

I have been running a 96 ecu in my 98 for a several weeks now with no codes
PM me if you have any ?
For a 99, it will take some terminal re-locating in the ecu harness connector to get the engine to run. I have the pin-outs for a 99 to a 96. You will get a series of EVAP and EGR related codes because the systems are different. Also, the harness rewiring will probably only work for a manual tranny. The TCM in an auto is completely different between 96 and 99.
