Tiptronics is and overrated. You either WANT a manual or you dont.

It's very possible to do it, but it's so impractical and it would cost too much.

isn't there a box someone came out with that hacked the TCU and used the cruise control as a shifter?

the JGTC guys use that cause its shifts faster than hands, and every second counts.

Do you think you'd get tired of the triptonic?

Just to make sure i have it right the triptronic is the same as a sequential gear box? where you change up and down via paddles, or that long azz shifter (watching too much WRC).
if you'll have to shift all the time with trip then its about the same as a manual, just with out have to clutch in first.

I'm with SoulFly either you want a Manual or not, no offensence but I feel that the paddles and such are just for posers, unless your on the track trying to set some serious lap times.

Down shifting is, upshift is not. But if you floor itI(let tranny downshift on its' own) then go into the gear to redline it, it is not a prob.

I think all these semi-auto tranny systems are a scam. It's basically an auto transmission that you tell when to up or down shift. No biggie, you can do that with a regular auto by moving the shifter yourself. All these car companies just package it pretty and give it fancy names and give you video game paddles sometimes on the steering wheel and such. For God sakes, if a Hyundai has it as an option, how complex can it be ?

And in some cars, even if you switch over to the manual shifting mode and floor it, once you get to a certain RPM, the tranny will shift for you anyway.

A real semi-auto system would allow me to skip gears if I choose to, like go from 5th to 3rd for a quick pass or from 2nd to 5th on a downhill where you just wanna pick up speed. A real semi-auto system would also let me redline it to my heart's content if I felt like it.

And the Indy race cars that have buttons to shift gears up/down on the steering wheel, still have to clutch in to 1st gear... only the other gears are button controlled once the car is rolling. Race cars have a much more sophisticated system comparable to what a real semi-auto system SHOULD be, not this "manuSCAMic" system.

If you have an auto tranny with 3 forward gears and an overdrive, there isn't anything that's going to change that. Triptronic??? Do any of you except Igobuk know what it really is? If you want to upgrade, try a some type of shift kit.

And try using capital letters, complete spelling of words and some grammar.

i agree with you igobuk, my friend has an audio with the shifter on the steering wheels. you could choose auto or stick. but the thing is after you top out on the stick mode the tranny shifts it self. so basically its a second set of buttons. you guys got to remeber ITS ONLY ONE TRANSMISSION ON THE CAR!

Yeah, I do love being able to control my shifts. That's why I got a 5-speed.

Could your dad's SLK go from 4th to 2nd by skipping 3rd... Nope.

Not real control then, just an illusion... but's it your car, time and money.

Yeah- I remember that, and it had gear info inbetween the tach and speedo. It was a really cool project. I could never pull that off.

Okay, so taking the car out of autodrive when on the car is on the highway is not bad for the car, but shifting manually is- am I correct? I think i am a little too careful with my max and wind up not enjoying to the max- pun intended.

That has to be the one of the most craziest things I've ever heard.

F1 and Ferraris for example use a clutch like a 5 speed that once you press the shifter on the wheel it sends a computerized signal to shift the clutch within a matter of milliseconds... the tip tronic like in chryslers is nothing more than a scam that holds the car in gear until you shift it... why do you think if you dont shift it and redline it will do it on its own?

i think at WOT the tcm controlls the shift w/o input from user, the box jsut rewires the 1-2-3-OD controls by tapping in one of the lines from the tcu, in no way does it change the preprogrammed code its meant to follow at certain times. like try going 40mph then shifting into 1rst, your car wont let you if your tcm is working correctly
