So how come there isn't any early maximas with a turbo vg33
or even better a vg30dett stroker
That would create some serious drive shaft mashing fun

VG33ER = supercharged Frontier/Xterra. It was also used the Quest (non s/c of course) for some time. The new Frontiers use a VQ40. I believe the n/a VG33E is rated at 190hp, with the ER somewhere around 220hp, IIRC. The VG33ER would a killer motor for our cars, but I seriously doubt it would fit underhood. You can find pics of the s/c version everywhere, and the supercharger sits on the block and is very tall. I also have no idea about whether or not the mounts would work or what trans options you have. Here's a link that BRIEFLY outlines boring out the 3.3 into a 3.4 if you want to go even further:

If I ever get to the stage where I actually (and realistically) start looking to upgrade major power, I'd take a long hard at the VG33. You can get junked ones for under $1,000. Although, looking at what it takes to drop a VG30ET, with it's "minor" differences makes me wonder what kind of major differences there are between a VG30 and VG33.

Oh, and BTW, you are correct. The VG30DETT won't fit in a 3rd gen, let alone a 2nd. You'd need to get rid of the firewall, radiator, or more likely, both to even get the thing in there at all.

That's good news. Does anybody know anything about mount locations or transmission options?

Here is a pic I found of the VG33ER. As you can see, the supercharger sits VERY high, well above the valve covers. I don't see how it'll fit underhood of the max at all.

The other option is to relocate the S/C. It doesn't need to be on top of the IM. If you can do a custom pulley setup (and someone has done it on a 4th gen), you can get it to work.

Here's a site with specs:

http://xterragalactica.net/specs2001.html

The abridged version:

HP..................................170 @ 4,800 rpm
Lb ft torque......................200 @ 2,800 rpm
Compression ratio ..............8.9:1
Bore X stroke (inches) ........3.602 X 3.268

That was from the 2001 model, it's gone up a bit since then. The extra power is simply because the engine is bigger. I was doing a little searching last night and saw an article where they put a VG33 into a Z31 and tuned it to 500hp.
