restricter behind tb
restricter behind tb
i had to replace my iavc today and when i took the tb off i found what looked like a restricter. is it ok to remove it does anyone know what it's for?
There was a thread about this. It won't hurt anything, but I'm not sure if it'll do a whole lot for you. Part of it seems to be a protrusion that guides air smoothly into the manifold I think...
not sure if anyone ever found a specific reason for it being there. i removed mine about 6 months ago with no issues. comparing the plate and tb size wise, it is obvious that it is a a restriction. some people said they felt a low end loss when they removed it but i have not experienced anything of the kind. i also found as others did that there was paint missing from it. only one place it could have gone and i would like to limit the amount of paint my engine takes in.
Some people that removed the restrictor found a more pronounced intake whistle when crusing or accelerating at part throttle. I like the whistle, and I been driving without mine for about a year now. No noticable gains or losses in power here.
Mike is right on, I also removed it and noticed a much more pronounced whistling, a slight drop in low-end TQ and more important, about a 75 rpm higher idle.
I did not like that and figured it's mostly due to removing the tongue-looking thing at the bottom of the restrictor which is prolly an air flow guide and also because the lower portion of the restrictor (below the tongue-looking thing) actually covers up the part of the TB where the idle air is controlled......that's probably why removing the restrictor caused my idle RPMs to go up a bit.
My fix for all this was to take a Dremel and open up the part of the restrictor that's above the tongue-looking thing to match the manifold, leaving everything beneath the tongue-looking thing (what I presume to be an air guide) untouched.
The RPMs dropped back to normal, the whistle quieted down dramatically -although you can still hear is a wee bit- and more important, the car does indeed feel a bit better on the top end -at least with a butt dyno. I've had the modified restrictor in the car now since summer with no ill effects nor negative impact to fuel mileage.....

I've had mine removed for quite a while now and have had no problems. The whistle is louder, but I kinda like it. Just like a few have said, it was a restriction and the paint was chipping on mine as well.
Nobody is going to read my new thread on this matter, because it contains no relevant information. Now that I've found this thread, I think it would be better for the forum as a whole if I posted my questions and findings here instead of polluting the forums with a new long thread. Anyway, here's what I found when I took off my throttle body to clean it.
"I just took apart my intake and removed my throttle body to clean it. As far as I can see, there's nothing that even remotely looks like a restrictor plate between the throttle body and intake manifold. There's a thin metal ring, but it has the same diameter as the TB/IM, so it's not restricting flow at all. There's also no "tongue" or other protrusion to direct incoming air.
Most of the threads I've seen regarding this plate are from VQ30 owners. Does the VQ35 not have this plate at all?"
