tach only winds to 2000 rpm....

So i just bought my 95 gxe 2 weeks ago. it was in a front end accident, bags deployed, the front ends of the frame are a little bent but the car drives straight. When i drove it home i'm pretty sure the tach showed the true rpm. not positive because its an auto...wasnt really paying attention. ive spent the last 2 weeks tearing apart the front end and fixing it....just drove it 2 days ago and the tach will only wind to around 2 grand. from idle to there it is normal, but it wont go any higher. Does anyone know how its hooked up, or what could be wrong. the airbags were deployed, and i havent had the new ones put in yet. other than that all the wiring is intact and functional. not a big deal...but just one of those things.

Does the engine go past that, as if to sound as if it's going higher than that rpm, meaning it's just not the tach reading correctly, or does it bog at 2k?

he says it "only winds to 2 grand," so i guess he means, it only goes up to 2K

I would be more than happy to take that extra gauge cluster off your hands! I haven't been able to read my tach for over a year...it just dies after two minutes of warming up the engine. How much?!

if its right at 2K, try wiggling your MAF sensor connector while giving it a bit of gas, if it suddenly works, bingo.

Most likely a new MAF + maf connector will fix your woes.

Revving to only an actual 2k, and revving to 6k while reading only 2k are 2 entirely different problems, one is a MAF, the other is a dead tach. The dead MAF will bog/sputter @ any RPM, typically 2k, while with a dead tach, the car will run flawlessly but not indicate the correct RPM.

do you stand in all this?

the engine is definitely revving past 2 grand. its just that the tach wont go past 2000 rpm. its like it hits a wall. ill try wiggling the maf, see if that helps. njmax, how much for your cluster, and does it have white faced gauges??

also, today i drove the car about 300 miles, stopped for gas, and when sitting still the car stalled twice. it idled rough, then died when i shifted from reverse to drive or vice versa. i know its a little off topic, but could this be bad coil pack? or something more serious. the car runs fine when not at idle.

Don't wiggle the MAF read my post, your maf has nothing to do with it.

You need a new tach, PM njmax, he will sell you a whole new cluster as stated in post #5.

fixed my own stalling problem, opened the hood, and the airbox pipe had slipped out of the maf somewhat. small gap, but enough to screw it up. damn ohio and ny roads....shakes the car all to hell. if anyone else has a gauge cluster for sale...let me know.

Maybe you should specify you want SE gauges because you look like as if you did not realize the infamous post #5 ... before you get mad at me ...
