So far it's great. I'll post a more detailed review when I get to know the unit a little bit better.

Some Observatios :

-Switching between MP3's is FAST. I heard the AVN has a 1-2 second delay

-The maps and interface are way nicer looking than the avn (which is extremely bland IMHO).

- So far the maps in Rochester, NY are dead on (haven't really driven far, so I reserve the right to change my opinion on this)

-Routing is adequately fast.

Negatives :

-The interface is a lot slower than the AVN's. I hate the menu animations. You have to watch the buttons slide onto the screen everytime you want to do something.

-You can't switch to guide or route view while you are on a smaller side road (like the one in my apartment community). Those options are grayed out, and you can only go into map view or vehicle dynamics view despite the fact that a route is set. Perhaps i'm missing a setting somewhere, but this is rather annoying! I would like to preview the route before getting underway!

 

Nope (see writeup). You will get a "Parking Brake lead is improperly connected" message and the unit will lockout. It checks whether you are moving w/ the parking brake grounded (like the N2).

There supposedly is a way (see writeup), but I didn't try it.

ah the D1 has that built in gyro that can tell the vehicle is moving. thought it was only the N2's and D2's, not the D1 as well

either way, good job.

 

Yup... Actually, there is no D2, and the gyro is not necessary. The VSS and GPS are more than enough to tell the unit that it's moving!

All my info is coming through random grapevines, so I guess it's all wrong regarding the Pioneer Nav units.... oh well. me =

 

After visiting 2 nissan dealers in the local area (who couldn't locate the ventc part that courtesy sells), I ordered the trim from courtessyparts.com ...

Remember the argument about whether or not the GXE trim would fit in the gap between the radio or not... Well i just noticed something from the pictures which makes a HUGE difference! the GAP is not the same with both pieces!

Take a look at my SE vent piece


It looks like the GXE trim can't possibly fit there... --but-- take a look at the GXE vent piece!


Look at the distance from the bottom of the vents (vent direction controls) and where the radio starts. They are different between the GXE vent and SE vent pieces!

I'm posting this in case it saves someone a lot of second-guessing, will put up pictures of the gxe trim installed once i get it.

Tomz, thanks for the installation info. I just had the D1 installed in my Quest and like it so much that I'm thinking of replacing my recently purchased Kenwood HU (in my Maxima) with this. Your instructions should help me A LOT when I make the switch. AWESOME!!!

BTW, I was under the impression that Courtesy Nissan's trim bezel would work well for aftermarket double-DIN setups.

 

Those differences in gap lie more in the radios than the trim bezzels. Looking good on the install.

 

Well, I guess we'll know for sure when the trim gets here. My suspicion is that it will work reasonably well. From the pictures it is very clear that my SE vent piece has more plastic below the vent than the gxe trim piece.

Tom, the gap that you see is because of the Eclipse unit, NOT because of the trim piece. You can't compare the fitment of your Avic to the 5435; apples to oranges

My huge realization was that the amount of plastic between the vents and where the radio starts is different for the SE vent and the GXE vent pieces. Has nothing to do with the radio!

If you look at my original pictures, at first glance it looks like the GXE piece doesn't have enough room to fit (which was in line with the comments i was getting). But you can't use the SE vent to judge that distance! I believe the GXE piece will fit.

Here's a pic with the GXE kit... knew it would work!!! (still need to fix the piece of ABS on the bottom, as the entire panel is sticking out about a tenth of an inch...)

 

Good job. I really thought the vents would be exactly the same across, but I guess not.

 

Same here, until i looked at the pictures really closely... look up 2 posts at the pictures with the red circles and the space between where the vent ***** end and where the radio starts.


Turns out the standard mounting is perfect for the D1 + GXE factory kit (this wasn't obvious by looking at the SE vent piece!). In any case, this greatly simplifies the install, as I just screwed to the same holes the stock radio was in (no drilling)... There IS a little bit of a gap at the bottom of the unit (gxe kit > 2 din), which I just filled up with some ABS plastic (a rim piece came with the D1... i cut it up and filed a little bit to make it semi-fit... still needs a little bit of work to let the panel snap in all the way (above HVAC), but looks pretty good as-is.
