5spd guys - How is your clutch pedal set?

Where is the grab point on your clutch set? Do you prefer it near the top or near the bottom?

High grab and you can do 9's.

Odd question. I prefer it where the factory recommends it.

How do you know it high when it could just be factory set up?

We're just talking about whether the clutch engages near the top or the bottom of the pedal's travel, not whether it's higher or lower than stock.

Personally I think it's very unwise to try to make it "high" or "low". If one understands how the clutch system works.

Yes you can. God help you maneuver tools in that tiny space (I ended up having to dismount the seat and laying face-up with my back on the floor and I barely managed it), but you can do it.

PM me and I'll email you the section of the FSM with instructions on how to do it.

Because you can. Same reason for any adjustment based on preference.

Is it gonna come to e-blows between you and me again, Jeffy?

Why?? When significant adjustments in either direct risk the proper function of the clutch. And since clutches are a big pain in the **** to change and they aren't exactly cheap, what's the exact reason again??

Well, isn't that only in extreme cases? I'd think you could tweak it up or down within a certain range without adverse effects, no?

Tweak it to even make it worth whatever you are trying to accomplish? Probably not.

i think that as your clutch goes the grab point changes...so wouldnt it be alright to edjust the pedal so that the grab point is back in its normal factory spec'd spot. mine used to be lower and now its noticably higher and i want to make it lower again.

I like mine up high, otherwise I tend to let the clutch out too soon and grind the gears. Its such a horrible sound to hear

I like mine low. It's easier to keep from rolling back on hills when you first start to go. High clutch makes it a pain cause I have to let it out before I even take my foot off the brake. (not that hills are that big a problem in Houston... but still)

I don't have a manual and a high clutch point would not make me roll on a hill. Just hold the clutch under the engagement point when you are waiting. Whenever you are shifting/changing gears/doing anything with the clutch, you do not have to put it on the floor ... it is just recommended to be safe and not grind.

And you're going to blow gears b/c that clutch grabs so damn hard. Our transmissions have glass gears and 3rd is particularly prone to failure. Why the hell do you need a stage 3? Are you even pushing 200whp? I think not.

My stock clutch grabs too high, it need to be adjusted.

Basically you want to have your clutch properly adjusted so it fully engages and full disengages. Too high of a grab point the clutch may not fully disengage which will kill your clutch faster. Same in reverse for a low grab point. I believe this is what Jeff is refering when he said "Personally I think it's very unwise to try to make it "high" or "low". If one understands how the clutch system works."

Stock clutch with high (long) pedal travel. I'd rather it engage lower myself, but I adapt and I have no problems rolling back on hills. That's what the e-brake is for.

I have the Exedy Stage one, and it grabs failry low with no adjustments. I like it his way. The Stock clutch seemd to grab high comapared to this one, but it never bothered me.
Now that Ive gotten used to the low engagment of the Exedy, I think going back to the OEM would drive me nuts.

I have an ACT stage 1 and I feel like it grabs in the low range. I like it because it feels responsive. You do have to pay attention to it, but thats why I like driving the car.

When I drive my buddies '96 with OEM replacement it feels like it catches WAY later than mine and as a result I tend to rev a bit high for the first few minutes while driving it, make me feel like a nOOb hahah.

I agree with THT about the clutch being rough on the tranny, I usually quickly modulate until 3rd in hard driving. Otherwise I will bang the hell out of second (NOT so great for the drivetrain) and I have filled mounts. When I slam the 2-3 I will get a chirp and it does feel like the tranny catches very abruptly.

I can only imagine a stage 3 and what kind of stress you are putting on an achilles-heel-like Nissan 5 speed tranny.

What about the "normal" "in the middle" option? Mine is right where it should be, and I want it and like it that way. When the clutch was first put in, it was kinda of low, but after a while it got to where I feel it should be. 5th gen clutch kit by the way.

Yea, 5th gen Pressure Plate, and Disk...it probably tends more to the low side, but can be classified as "just right".

It's possible to adjust the "engagement point" (within reason of course) without affecting the overall travel of the MC cylinder piston. Adjusting "pedal height" is the one that's a bad idea.

Stock with high engagement

Hey all, I'm new to the nissan thing, I fing the engagement point WAY high and VERY short. Not a progressive engagement at all. I'm adjusting but overall I find it quite awkward compared to other manuals I've owned. ('87 VW Scirocco & '85 Mustang gt). I actually had the clutch done hoping to remedy this because I assumed it was worn and causing the high engagement point. Once we got it apart i was faced with a clutch that still had 60% wear left in it. We were already there so whaddaya do ... replace it. Stock clutch kit, machined the heat marks off the flywheel, put it all back together and VOILA! exactly the same.
I like a lower engagement point, it's just much more comfortable. The leg is closer to full extension, who wants to feather a clutch with your knee up under your chest? It's stupid. First car i've ever driven like this. Hoping this engagement point adjustment i've been reading about is legit. BTW ... pretty nice ride otherwise. Loving that smooth pulling 3litre. first jap car too, i like it .

I've been meaning to lift mine but I want to be sure that my clutch leak has been solved first. Once I've gotten used to it as it is I'll increment it upwards until I like it.

I've never found two clutches to be alike. Supposedly mine has a 5th gen clutch bolted to the Fidanza flywheel. It feels ever so good (to me) but has very small chatter upon disengagement. It is what it is, but mine grabs not far from release off the floor, right where I like it.
