Can't get car into gear

This morning I started my car and it would not go into gear. I pressed on the clutch and the car started. I changed the rear brake pads this weekend and that was about it. I did notice a deep kind of winding the past couple of times that I drove it. When I stepped on the cluctch there is little resistance it goes to the floor and doesn't pop up it takes awhile to come back up. hte car is a 95 se with a five speed.

Probably something having to do with your clutch master cylinder. You're not actually engaging the clutch when you push down your pedal, but since it's physically down there it trips the sensor to let you start the car. Since it's having trouble coming back up, it's most likely something in the clutch hydraulic system.

Anyone else want to chime in with me here?

I agree. It sounds like you have a leak in the line. check the fluid level on the clutch fluid reservoir. Fill it up and bleed the clutch and check for leaks in the line. If there is, replace the line with stainless steel.

I just went out to look at it and the slave cylinderr was empty. I added some brake f;uid and it went into gear. It was hard but it did move. How do I bleed the clutch? If someome can point me in the right direction I would be grateful. Thanks guys you hit it on the money.

Follow the clutch line down to the slave cylinder, front top of tranny. Kinda odd position to get to, but there's the 1st bleeder.

After you bleed that, do the top on, on the driver side shock tower. If you want I can post a pic.

Hmm... this kinda explains it, but doesn't mention the 2nd bleeder on the shock tower.

Wierd I got the same problem only it happens every now and then. I had pretty much everything replaced including the tranny. It only does it going into first.

Sometimes I can't get it into reverse gear - have to press the clutch again. Also getting into first is kindof hard. Is there anything I can do?

If it was empty then you have a leak some where. Check both the slave cylinder and the master cylinder (near the brakes master cylinder) carefully for leaks. They are both cheap parts and relatively easy to replace.

I just posted this in a similar thread but it's the same issue: In 2002, my clutch became harder and harder to engage when I was putting it in gear from being parked, until one day it wouldn't go in at all. I had it towed to the dealer because it was absolutely stuck - I thought it was the clutch, and it was only the slave cylinder and clutch hose (tech found leaking clutch fluid). The total bill was around $250.

Incidentally, how long should our clutch last?
