Wow! Mileage is STILL good

This past holiday has been the 1st time in a while that I've done a serious mileage check on the old girl and boy am I surprised. I've got about 213k on her, I've received about 3 KS codes in the past year and 1 02 code. My struts are blown, the alignment is toast and has been for several months, plus the tread on my tires aren't very even (Im sure due to alignment), but Maxeene is still getting 24 - 26mpg. I gotta tell ya, over 5 years of ownership and Im STILL blown away by this car.

Capitone

P.S.-don't ask why some of these things haven't been taken care of.

Why haven't some of these things been taken care of?

My mileage has dropped 10-15% since the cooler temps have rolled in...

You'd be surprised - it got down to around 48 last night, which happens to be extremely cold for dumb Floridians. Man, I wished I had stayed in Jersey.

Yes - I am surprised... I didn't realize it got quite that "cool"... I'll still take that over the 20 degree spell we're having around here.

I always thought that cooler weather meant more condensed air which is "good" for overal performance. I know the last time I did a check in MPG was during the summer and I was reading about 22-24. If anything, mileage has gone up since the cooler weather set in. Have you gotten any recent codes?

i've been getting significantly worse and worse mpg over the last few fill-ups. I was hoping it wasn't anything electrical (knock sensor, o2, etc..) I guess I'm not the only one. I'll try to pull some codes this weekend as well.

to those getting worse mileage now that winter is here, it could be from the winter mix gasoline.

It's actually 14.1 .. I think you should do an average using nearly an entire tank.

Re read this thread it might help you.

The y-pipe should help you get better mileage.

i recently drove 1000 round trip from NJ to NC. On the way down, 26.5 mpg. On the way back to NJ, 26 mpg. About 7% going down was in traffic, and about 15% coming back was in traffic (thanksgiving weekend). Speed on the highway was around 75-80mph.

93 octane. Automatic. Hacked airbox with K&N and warpspeed y-pipe.

This used to be my mother's car before she got a new one and I bought this. My father said he got just under 30 mpg on a trip they took from NJ to New Orleans 3 years ago. I've never been able to replicate this in the 30k miles that I've owned the car.

I would get 24mpg very consistently, 30mpg on long trips (with 5 adults in the car)

welp i just ran an ecu check.

only got one code though. 0304 which indicated knock sensor failure.

could that be the cause of god awful mileage?

Those who are getting poor MPG, make sure you guys are using at least 91 octane. Your engine will run optimal with that fuel. Also, when have you'all changed your fuel filter, cleaned/replaced your air filter, and checked/change your plugs? Check your ignition timing, although its all adjusted by the ECM, failing airflow sensors could affect it drastically which utlimately affects engine performance and fuel economy. You need to get a Chilton manual to get the how-to. There might be some in the stickies. Regular maintenance is a must.

Just filled her up this morning.... trip odometer read 244 miles, and I had to put 12.9 gallons. That less than 20 mpg. 3 days ago, I put seafoam through the brake booster, and 1 month ago I used Chevron Techron in my tank. I haven't tried to check for any ghost codes, but I'll probably try that tomorrow.

Something is going horribly wrong in this area. All summer I averaged about 24 mpg.

I just got back form a trip to Toledo, round trip about 6 hours. I drove up there on the highway, about 35 city miles around there, and halfway back. 323 miles. I put 10.840 gallons in. That is 29.79 mpg in a 1996 5 speed with 145,000 miles. That is excellent in my opinion!
