GL-5 trans oil experiences

Acording to the threads I've read, GL-5 gear oil in our transmissions will shorten their life. Does anyone have any real world experience with this happenning?

I put Mobil 1 syn gear lube, GL-5, in my max 5spd trans a week after I bought it (6/97) ( didn't know any better) . Now I'm at 158 000 miles, no trans problems but thinkin its time to change it. So any real world experiences?

The theory is that GL-5 additives (for better performance in hypoid differentials) attack the brass/bronze synchronizers, causing them to wear faster. However, I've never heard of synchros themselves failing due to wear. Usually synchros die because of breakage or damage from poor shifting. In these transmissions, the bearings tend to die even sooner, so I doubt you'll hear from many folks who have ever worn out their synchros.
