Need wisdom from the org...tranny probs

Hi guys,

Right now when I start my car I gets a loud grinding noise, but it won't start. This happened when I was driving home, I then hurd a clunk and the car dies. I start the car back up and it starts but once I put it into gear I would not budge and the car dies. Luckily I was close to home and had enough inertia to coast home.

My clutch has been slipping for awhile and I only notice it when my car is loaded with passengers or heavy objects. I was contemplating a rebuild. before this everytime I drive my car for the first time each day, I would get a whining almost turbo whining sound in 1st and 2nd. After it warms up, no whine.

So with that I hope someone has a ballpark idea as what's going on.

Thank you in advance.

The input shaft bearing in the tranny is most likely shot...Fairly common problem with the 3rd gen manual tranny...

From what you explained,it sounds like the input shaft broke..

input shaft bearings are definitely shot, as well as the clutch is worn out. since you've got to pull the tranny to replace the clutch, might as well just get it out and crack the case open and see what you find broken inside.

a rebuilt tranny doesn't have to be expensive. i found a guy who used to work at a nissan dealership who rebuilt mine for $450 since i did removal and install myself. (450 still alot but not compared to what it could be)

yeah i lucked out finding him. he knew the tranny inside out so he could do it quick and make his money. from what i hear, mechs want to do the remove and install to up the labor to make their money so you have to find a mech that doesn't mind you doing that.

Looks like I gotta crack the case anyway. Does anyone know how much an input shaft run for? I guess I should go with drivetrain for the rebuild kit as well.
